K’taka saffronising school texts: Panel

New Delhi Allegations of saffronisation of school textbooks in BJP-ruled Karnataka have reached the Centre with demands for a thorough probe into “academically poor and saffronised textbooks with many a distortion and misrepresentation”.

The Committee for Resisting Saffronisation of Education has submitted a memorandum to the NCERT as well as to Human Resource Development Minister Pallam Raju alleging that the new textbooks released for class V and VIII by the Karnataka Textbook Society are for most part against the spirit of the National Curriculum Framework 2005 and have a “hidden agenda to instill and build up non-secular values, religious fundamentalism and the idea of a Hindu Rashtra in crores of young and impressionable minds”.

The NCERT is learnt to have written to their counterparts in Karnataka on the issue seeking their response on it, sources confirmed.

The committee has in its memorandum — a copy of which is with The Indian Express — said that while the new textbooks have been released by the Karnataka Textbook Society (under the DSERT), these were not subjected to scrutiny by independent or well-known educationists and nor was public opinion invited on them.

The committee has alleged that these books contain lessons that “treat Dalits, women, adivasis and minorities as inferior beings whereas NCF 2005 clearly recommends that the curriculum should be culturally neutral”. It is alleged that history presentation in the textbooks was found “toeing the line of the Sangh Parivar”.

Pointing out specific instances from the class V social science textbook, the committee has said that there is a clear anti-minority bias in content depicting Muslim kings as persecuting Hindu subjects and Hindu kings only fighting Muslim kings. An instance from the class VIII Hindi textbook refers to a lesson on ‘Punyakoti’ where a tiger takes an oath saying that “consumption of cow’s meat is a bad thought; henceforth, I will not eat cow’s meat”, whereas the original Kannada version mentions no such oath.

Demanding that the school textbooks be offered for scrutiny by the NCERT, the committee has suggested that the Karnataka Textbook Society, when preparing new textbooks, should consult its counterparts in Kerala who are considered experts in the field and invite suggestions from eminent educationists and the public.

It is time to completely separate Veer Savarkar's Hindutva ideolgy from this Dhongi Majority of RSS and VHP by Gaurav on 17 Jan 2013

The biggest problem of our societal set-up is that our education system and our up-bringing are influenced by biases, political vested interests, power hungry desires and AHAM BRAHMASMI (I am the only great) attitudes. Events and realities in the history of this sub-continent are distorted within seconds on the basis of religion, faiths, castes, etc. to extract immediate benefit to RULE THE MASSES as it is the most easiest way to motivate and attract crazy empty brains at will. Hinduism is absolutely not a religion it is just a way of life. The word Hindu itself is a PERSIAN word which originates from the river Sindhu. At the same time, these committees should be replaced by eminent un-biased intellectuals who have the guts to introduce and safeguard the real historical events in the schooling literature. It is unfortunate that the painful work and sacrifice of V.D Savarkar has gone waste. Both, the Congis and the so-called Right Fascists have exploited the word HINDU.

Shocking by raj on 17 Jan 2013

Shocking I would say. We have heard Taliban and Irans Aytollahs doing the same to women and the people of those nations. But to see in a so called modern democratic India this is shocking. The netas after robbing the roads, banks, our childrens education, rivers, massive looting have finally arrived to the core - train people to become pigs. That is what pakistan, srilanka, Iran, Iraq, Somalia, Mali forces all do. It is good BJP is competing with medieval islamists to get a spot in the same pedastal.

Indian History is ridden with with paradoxes. Aryan,Chinese,Islamic,British invaders all left some intrinsic values to our society. To institutionalise one over the the other smacks of ulterior motives. Kamasutra cult invoked a sense of enjoyment to the masses, who were being straight jacketed into religeous regimens only. Today a bit here and a bit there is missing the point of fostering national unity through equality of sexes and castes in India. The 'Secularisation' is one such movement to think advancement of the nation alone, above all sectarian rules and regulations. Kindredship and care of you neighbour is paramount to all requirement of religeon.

Who created this COMMITTEE by Surendran Nair on 17 Jan 2013

Must be a collection leftists whose only agenda in life is destroying anything that is left of Indian culture. And who the hell gave them the right to say that Hindu culture is wrong in a country taht is 80% Hindu. Is it not strange that there is no committee for resisting the painting of Indian textbooks RED and GREEN.It is high time that we have a committee to protect the rights and culture of the majority.

Saffronisng Text books by Subodh Prabhu on 17 Jan 2013

WIthout our core values, India is doomed. It is fact that Muslim rulers did persecute Hindus. There is nothing wromg in telling the Students. This Seculars would demand that all history about Hitler and Holocast be erased as this would promote enmity between Christians and Jews. But this is not a fact, jews and Christians live peacefully together. But another Holocast cannot happen as the people are warned from childhood. Same way, no rulers muslims or hindus can persecute the subjects again, though we have democracy. This is nothng but votebank politics

Senceless observation by Panel by M. Gal Reddy on 17 Jan 2013

Stop calling saffronization ,it is nothing but insulting your birth in this sacred Nation. Let good wisdom previals among these foolish ,self claimed intellectals , who are mental slaves of Lenin , Mao etc. with extra terriotoroal loyaly

WHAT ELSE A SAFFRON COUNTRY SHOULD DO?? by CV KUMAR on 17 Jan 2013

"Karnataka must have got the best state prize had they printed all books green and with 'chand-tara'(half moon with a star) all over it? WHAT THE BLOODY HELL! WE ARE A SAFFRON COUNTRY WITHOUT ANY DOUBT and if we TALK AND TEACH OUR CHILDREN ABOUT HINDU RASHTRA WHERE IS THE ANTI-NATIONAL ETHO BEHIND IT? We have seen enough of Jwaharlal Nehru's policy of garnering a "VOTE-BANK" or hoping to make this community a "SECULAR ONE"? His policy of appeasing of a coomunity has yielded negative results and the state has come to a level that THEY AND STINKING POLITICIANS LIKE MULAYAM BARGAIN OPENLY IN THE DAYLIGHT THE COST OF THEIR ENBLOCK VOTE-BANK? IF KARNATAKA IS WAKING UP HINDUS ABOUT THE REAL STATE OF THEIR COUNTRY AND SOCIAL ETHOS WHAT IS WRONG IN THAT?

It was fact Aurangazeb persecuted Hindus. Jijiya tax was levied. How can Text book say Aurangazeb loved Hindus for the sake of secularism? At the same time we need to tell young and students how our Secular PM Dr. MMS told the entire world Indians love Bush who killed million innocent Muslims in Afghanisthan and Iraq. History is neutral and not biased like our Governments and Secularists
