Lanka erasing Tamil culture: DMK chief to PM, Sonia

Express news service

Posted: Jan 21, 2013 at 0415 hrs IST

Chennai Charging Sri Lankan of carrying out a programme to erase the language, culture and religion of Tamils in that country, DMK president M Karunanidhi urged the Prime Minister and Congress president Sonia Gandhi to take measures to stop eradication of a great culture and ancient language.

In an identical letter to the PM and Sonia, he accused the authorities in the Island Nation of renaming Tamil villages, redrawing of village, town and district boundaries, demolition of temples, non-allocation of funds to resettle and rehabilitate the internally-displaced Tamil families, and promoting Sinhala settlements on Tamil lands. For instance, he said through annexures detailing the Tamil villages renamed into Sinhala, Thirukovil in Ampara district has been given the name Sirikovila; Ilankaipattinam in Trincomalee district renamed as Lankapattuna; Kilinochchi village in Kilinochchi district renamed as Granika; and Mullaittivu in Mullaittivu district into Mooladoova.

He said 89 Tamil villages have been renamed, 367 Hindu temples demolished, and 13 major and 148 mini army camps have been set up in Mullaittivu district alone.

Congratulations to Karunanidhi by Punya on 21 Jan 2013

85% of Sri Lankan Tamils are Hindu. The Tamil identity in Sri Lanka has been shaped by Tamil Hinduism. There was a separate Tamil pre-colonial kingdom in Sri Lanka since 1215 AD, one that the Portuguese had decimated in 1621 AD. The Tamils in Sri Lanka has their own codified personal law, their own historical manuscripts and their own archeological inheritance. The Sinhalese have systematically proceeded to Sinhalize Sri Lanka since independence. Rajapakse was one of the worst culprits in that regard. 40,000 Tamils civilians were killed in early 2009 alone due to the indiscriminate bombing of areas where civilians had sought shelter. I am happy that Karunanidhi has highlighted the Tamil dilemma. Now with Rajapakse having kicked out his Chief Justice, the West will gradually tighten the noose around him. The time is opportune for a Sinhalese Tamil reconciliation once Rajapakse is weakened.

Lanka erasing Tamil culture by S.S.Nagaraj on 21 Jan 2013

This is an utter falsehood and shameful statement from Karunanidhi. How can this happen when Rajapakse visits offers prayers at Tirupathi and Guruvayur while on his visits to India? How would he allow so many Hindu temples to be demolished? On the otherhand these are acts of Evangelists who have grand plan for creating a Tamil Christian nation comprising of southern Tamil Nadu and Jaffna area of Sri Lanka.Karunanidhi is complicit in this diabolical anti-Hindu plan.Has Karunanidhi ever visited a Hindu temple? Was he not in the forefront of Ganesha idol btreaking movement in yesteryears?Did he honour the Vivekanda memorial at Kanyakumari.Did he take action against those who attackeda Srilankan minister when he offered prayers at Kanyakumari temple? He has no business to talk about Hindu temples being demolished in Sri Lanka.

erasing of tamil culture in srilanka by gopalan kuppan on 21 Jan 2013

He will not visit hindu temple but will go to iftar parties. not because he has any affinity towards our muslim brethren but only because to catch their vote. If all the hindus decide to vote for a party that supports them then all the politicians including mr karnuanidhi will be knocking at their doors. shame on us

Tamil land is Tamil Nadu by Rahul on 21 Jan 2013

Tamil land and Tamil culture is in Tamil Nadu. Sri Lanka has never produced anything Tamil nor have we ever had any authentic Tamil culture. Everything Tamil was produced in Tamil Nadu and then exported to other places with Tamil migration. So, please don't try to Tamilize the Sinhalese island. 40% of Tamils in Sri Lanka are Christians. Only about 1 million Tamils are Hindus in Sri Lanka, and the Sinhalese too have temples for Hindu Gods. If so many Hindu temples are demolished, the question is how many were there prior to demolition to service the needs of a mere 1 million? Sri Lanka should take legal action NOW without delay against DMK for spreading Tamil extremist lies.

Lanka Erasing Tamil culture ! by Dr.G.G.Rajan on 21 Jan 2013

If Lanka is erasing Tamil culture in Sri Lanka, Congress led UPA is erasing Hindu culture in India selling India to Muslims under the guise of secularism! You, being a party to these culprits have no right to talk of Tamil culture in Sri Lanka!
