New Delhi Batting great Sunil Gavaskar reckons that Mahendra Singh Dhoni should "take a break" from Indian cricket captaincy and Virat Kohli will be an ideal replacement as he can bring in the "necessary flair like Tiger Pataudi."

"It's still early days as far as 2015 World Cup is concerned but I believe that a break in captaincy will do wonders for Dhoni. I am not saying that it has to happen during the middle of a series but may be after the Australia series or later part of 2013. We need to have a look at that," Gavaskar said.

The legendary opener felt that a break might give Dhoni an opportunity to put things into perspective and reflect on his game and leadership.

"The break might be a voluntary one or an enforced break. But he needs time to reflect on his game and come back in a better way. I am very impressed in the manner he remains cool and unlike other captain doesn't clap and all but a little break won't be bad. Captaining India is a high privilege but the demands and pressures that come with it are incredible," Gavaskar said.

Gavaskar named young Virat Kohli as Dhoni's possible successor.

"I could be wrong but Virat Kohli might bring the flair of Tiger Pataudi in his captaincy. If he knows that he will be appointed for long term, he has the dynamism, the aggression, panache and class. I like everything about him apart from his mouthing abuses when he reaches a milestone. I don't want him to change anything else as he can bring a lot of dynamism."

When asked whether Dhoni could remain in the team only as a player, Gavaskar answered, "Why not? He can be part of the team for the next couple of years as he is a match-winner."

One of the most prominent voices of Indian cricket, Gavaskar questioned the logic behind the national selectors reportedly asking Dhoni for a blueprint of World Cup 2015.

"I am a bit surprised because the selection committee gets one year term and how can one be sure that they are going to be there in 2014 to prepare a team for 2015."

With reports emerging that coach Duncan Fletcher's contract may not be renewed after the Australia series, Gavaskar said that an Indian should be appointed in the hot

seat.

"I would like it to be an Indian coach or somebody who is like Gary Kirsten. Kirsten had scored lots of runs in ODI and Tests and brought along a certain work ethic as he had done it all. If you have a champion cricketer, he can help you get better."

Gavaskar was speaking to NDTV today.

Gambhir must be our next captain by sanjay on 05 Jan 2013

Dhoni should be removed from India Team and Give gambhir a chance to lead out team. He would be a great captain like Ganguly. We all agree with KKR result. Because aggression must be there in cricket like Ganguly, Kapil Dev. Unfortunately dhoni hasn't and gambhir has. Give kohli a chance to become a captain, Its too early in his career. He is also struggling a lot. Give him a space and let him become more experience. At this stage, I don't think kohli is the right replacement for Indian captaincy. Gambhir is the right choice. Sorry for grammatically mistake.

Ms dhoni should remain as the captain of Indian cricket team

Longing for Captaincy by nvn on 31 Dec 2012

After removing Sehwag and Ghambir the team will be good with any captain. As long as this duo is there in the team, all captains and their captaincies will suffer. Or making one of them the captain and resting the other will also do good for the team.

MS Dhoni Captaincy by Chandra, jay on 28 Dec 2012

Virat Kohli is still an unfinished article, whether it is in the aspect of leadership, captaincy or even inhis forte-as a batsman.Has he proved himself overseas yet.Can he face pacemen in SA or Australia and swing in Britain. With his predominantly forward play,he is suspect anywhere except in subcontinent wickets.Making him skipper at this stage will finish him off as a batsman. The solution is to retain MSD for series to series(TINA) and under a leash that mandates him to behave less authoritarian-since he lacks the basic ability to perform as a batsman or anything else except as a WK.

Logical reasoning is not very sound by Anand Kumar on 28 Dec 2012

Once again we are not trying to fix the problems in the Indian team but we are just reacting to show that we are doing something. Question that need to be asked is - Is India losing all the games recently because of the captain? Will change in Captaincy alone put India on the road to success? If the answer of the above two questions are YES, then DHONI must be dropped immediately from captaincy. Otherwise we are just trying to make some small change and when this won't produce the result, we will again want a similar change and so on. Captain is as good as the team. Rather than going after the captain, we should be seriously thinking about the team structure, dynamics and replacement of the stalwarts recently retired. We should target to rebuild the team for the future and not just concentrate on the captaincy thing. Captain has remained the same in the last 3 years but his team has undergone a sea change during the same time period. If that too difficult to observe Mr Gavaskar?

Who is Sunil Gavaskar, a retired player, and how come Indian Express has this as the top news article! Crazy, let BCCI decide the fate and stupid people like Sunil or Kapil remember their time, when selectors were crying when these idiots would retire!!

yes ! change is needed by digpal on 27 Dec 2012

there is no shame of his not begaing captaincy, cricket history if full of such examples. mark my words tht he will perforf even better.

Sunny on Dhoni (Dec 27) by Prof. Ramesh Sinha on 27 Dec 2012

I agree with the views of Sunil Gavaskar but disagree on his contention to drop Dhoni from all the three formats. He must be upheld for T-20 captaincy for obvious reasons.
