Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag have failed to set a good platform for the middle order batsmen for some time and the latter was today replaced by young batsman Ajinkya Rahane for today's match against Pakistan.
However, the script did not change with the replacement as India yet again struggled to negotiate the fiery fast bowling spell of the visitors.
Dhoni said India badly needed its openers to do well with the England series just around the corner.
"We have to be a little patient with the openers. The bowling was good and the pitch offered some help. Also with two new balls being used from both the ends, it may be a reason for them not doing well. But we want out openers to do well as we as a team rely on them," Dhoni said after India edged past Pakistan by 10 runs for a face-saving win.
Asked about Sehwag's ouster from the side, Dhoni said it was last minute change to give those players a chance who were on the sidelines.
Sehwag has also been dropped from the Indian squad for the first three matches of the five-ODI series against England, starting January 14.
Dhoni credited the whole team for today's win and specifically praised the athletic fielding.
"Victory makes you feel good. It was a team effort, fielding was good. We saved about 20 runs and its impact in the games, which are not high scoring, is huge. The fast bowlers gave us the breakthrough and then the spinners did well. Overall it was outstanding fielding, barring a catch that was dropped," he said.
I guess u people r not watchin matches. Raina has been better than da othr batsman in da series against Pakistan. Kohli and Gauti had a bad series against Pakistan bt dey performed consistently in the Srilanka Tour and CB Series. If Irfan was fit he would have been in the side, but nw Jadeja z playin in place of him.He my not be gud with da bat but he bowled well , doing the job f a 5th bowler. Respected Indian captain if you remember the two balls were used previously also nobody had the problem at that time. Please give suitable reasons not others. accept the team batting failure and try to improve the batting or else some many player are available you can utilize them. Also a request to media never every praise a bowler or batsmen when he perform especially to Indian player they will climb-up and feels that they are in the cricket for another 10 years with one match performance. selectors took some hard decision they is not personal cricket or private game it is pride and honor for we Indian. for watching a match will are running away from our responsibilities on that particulars day. Play serious at least know make us proud not ashamed

A new ball was used after 25 overs previously.The other ball is not made of stone , but it will take time for Rahane to perform and soak the pressure, so seniors should take in the responsibilty.When batsmen have bowlers like Junaid and M.Irfan bowling from both ends , it makes the cricket ball similar to a stone.

The truth is IPL and the money that comes with it has made most of our players think that playing for India is 'a necessary evil' they must undergo to be able to play in IPL. The same new ODI rule is appplicable when Pakistan openers were batting.Only 'difference' is they are not part of the IPL Crorepati group.
Dhoni the saviour. We indians are fed with politics inside cricket. The truth is if not Dhoni, only two players could have been replaced, either Sehwag or Ghambir. But internally when they were not making big runs, instead of motivating them and building their confidence, he built pressure that the whole team heavily relies on openers, they should have been playing their natural game and giving a good start, but as Dhoni expected, Sehwag and Ghambir did not perform. As if the whole debacle of losses was only bcoz of Sehwag, he is thrown out and Ghambir will be the next player to give place to Murali Vijay. This is how Dhoni wanted it and this is where we'll get in future. If India wins we just forget about all ill practices that's been followed. Taking the whole country to shame with mere politics is criminal. Shameless. Dhoni could have come at #3 or #4 and showed others to bat with him, but he continued to play safe with the old ball. Why the batting order was not changed?, Sehwag could have been blistering in middle order. Ganguly would have tried everything. But Dhoni, keeps his favourite pals close to him, Raina, Jadeja (now need bear this guy for few more matches), R Ashwin and Rohit Sharma. This new move from selector dropping only Sehwag proves one thing that Dhoni has a big say in everything, which is unfortunate. He should have been a better player instead of a politician in cricket (cricketician). I say he's spoiled the career of all the legends, the recent one is Sachin and Sehwag. Unpatriotic.
