Biman, a member of the theatre group Bohurupee, went missing on June 14, 1992, from Beniatola Lane in central Kolkata. His elder brother Bidhan Bhattacharjee and NGO All India Legal Aid Forum had approached Mamata, demanding that the case be reopened.
In a written complaint, Bidhan had blamed Deepa for his brother’s disappearance. He had stated that Biman and Deepa lived together for three years at her house on Panditya Road in south Kolkata, and that Biman was abducted with prior planning and later murdered. An FIR was lodged with the Gariahat police station and Deepa was questioned by the police.
The Raiganj MP and wife of former Union minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, Deepa said that while Biman was known to her and used to visit her house, “there was no relationship with him”. “Biman was a musician involved with theatre. His home was located outside Kolkata.
At that time a lot of friends from the world of culture used to visit our house. Often they stayed in my guestroom on the ground floor. Biman too stayed in the guestroom for three months,” she told The Indian Express.
Questioning the timing of the probe, Deepa added: “Why was everyone silent on his disappearance for so long? Now his family is saying a lot of things. Are they really concerned about Biman? I don’t know about the All India Legal Aid Forum. The matter has been highlighted after a long time with political motive in mind.”
According to Bidhan, both Biman and Deepa were involved with theatre and became close in the 1980s. At that time, she regularly visited their home at Konnagar. Later, they allegedly started to stay together at Panditiya Road at Deepa’s residence. While Biman was 29 years old at the time, she was 31, Bidhan said. Gradually, Bidhan claimed, the relationship soured, taking a turn for the worse in 1992 after Deepa and Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi became close.
On the day of his disappearance — June 14, 1992 — Biman was at a play rehearsal at Beniatola Lane when he had an altercation with Deepa, Bidhan said. He alleged that some youths were waiting outside the premises in a car, and that Biman was abducted from there.
While they had approached former chief ministers Jyoti Basu and Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee too, Bidhan said the police had failed to locate Biman and put the case on the backburner. General secretary of the All India Legal Aid Forum Joydeep Mukherjee said investigations will hopefully resolve the mystery.
Incidentally Deepa and Mamata have a long history of political rivalry in the state, with the MP a known opponent of the Congress alliance with the Trinamool Congress.

As per Deepa Dasmunshi's comments "%u201CWhy was everyone silent on his disappearance for so long? Now his family is saying a lot of things. Are they really concerned about Biman? I don%u2019t know about the All India Legal Aid Forum. The matter has been highlighted after a long time with political motive in mind.%u201D A crime commited long back is still a crime. You can not get away with something you did saying "it was done long back".
The way Mamta has been behaving since inception, it is clear that she has lost her mental balance. Instead of solving local problems in WB - she is camping in Delhi with stupid issues which are not her concern. Can she tell the public a single welfare measure she has taken so far after taking over. She is a libaility to WB and to India. She should learn to talk and behave properly.
Brave of mamta to open the past unsolved case. If Deepa is innocent, then she should not complaint - why the investigation now? In fact let the truth come out. Maybe previously Biman's family could not get cooperation from the authorities. Truth always prevail.
maa maati maanush will all be pleased if walmart enters retail trade not to do what it does everywhere but to invent new processes that do not require refrigeration, do not require transpiration across the nation, do jot require big godowns, do not require anything additional but pay royalties to existing traders for practices already in use - light on oil usage - from the lessons of milk producers in california and the farmers of the Midwest. The world needs new practices already in existence in India feeding 1.5 billion people - to benefit from it like google did with motorola. A win win situation for all. The experience will help Mamata didi carry the Bengalis to the next millennium stronger and wiser. While Manmohan Singhji's dream of growth does not fade away.
Is there 1.5 Billion people in India ? You are sure about this ? Please coiunt again :)
It is equally important that any injustice happen in past should be probed thoroughly and culprit should be penalised accordingly. Everyone knows about the gangsters of Congress as well as Comunist. weldone Mamata please give them justice.
Constitution provided Secular Law Enforcement, Investigation & Judiciary are all tools in the hands of ROYALS. If outsiders (non member of ROYAL Darbar) get to position of power he allso attempts to use them to pulverise the opposition. But it is very difficult since down the line the royal servents man all the positions. Thus government by outsider has to face a lot of difficulties and criticism later by congress on what they did during the time they were in power. It is a catch 22 situation which democratic change can bring about very slowly - may take more time than the time consumed to totally corrupt and impregnate the government authority with loyal supporters. So are we looking at 100 more years before equitable order can be established in INDIA. Quottrochi case is one strong well known example when when royalty lost power due to people's anger still nothing could be done due to there loyalist entrenched in all wakes of public life and positions of authority.
Mamata didi is opposed to FDI in retail industry with good reason. Walmart wants to bring outdated practices of supply chain management and cold storage to India that have proven to cause financial and health problems in USA. The recent crisis being faced by milk producers in California where low rates given to farmers because of the glut taking into account transportation costs of milk to other states or the unfeasibility of growing corn and other staple crops to keep inflation low prove that big retail is not beneficial for farmers or if the price rise expected soon not so beneficial for consumers too. However Manmohan Singh's government is committed to FDI in retail as it will bring in money for infrastructure or more importantly get India out of ratings downgrade thereby give a higher rate of growth and maybe even a higher rupee value. It might not all translate to direct benefit for Indians in terms of employment or quality of life. Which is the concern of Mamata Didi with the Maa
even if deepa contention about political vendetta is true, is it not the same legacy of congress party when they use , CBI, ED, IT DEPTT and all other agencies to harass civil right activists , baba ramdev to harass them in the name of law of land. congress must set better standard while dealing with opponents before crying foul if others do the same to them.
