Based on her complaint, the Greater Noida police have lodged an FIR under Section 498 (husband subjecting a woman to cruelty). In her complaint, the woman has also alleged that her family was being pressured for more dowry.
A senior police officer said the alleged gambling incident took place on November 23.
“Her husband, a labourer, was allegedly consuming alcohol and gambling with friends. The complaint says when he ran out of money, he added her to the wager. The day after this, the people who ‘won’ her, came to take her away, but her father arrived and took her to his home in Greater Noida,” a senior officer said.
According to the complaint, the woman married the labourer in February.
“She has further told us that despite her family giving their in-laws Rs 2 lakh and some land as dowry, she was being pressured for more. She said she was also beaten up for not following her husbands’ diktat,” a senior officer said.
Police said no arrest had been made thus far. “Since a complaint of this nature was received at the police station, we registered an FIR. We are coordinating with the Ghaziabad police in the investigation. However, we will only make an arrest if the allegations are proved true. Thus far, we have not been able to trace those who allegedly won her, and came to take her away. More information will emerge in the next few days,” a senior Noida police officer said.
