The company, in association with Gujarat government agencies, is planning a job fair on January 30 at the Industrial Training Institute, Kubernagar (Ahmedabad) for recruiting workers.
“Maruti Suzuki has about 1,000 vacant positions in its Manesar plant. These positions include automobile technicians, electricians, painters, turners and fitters, among others,” A M Malwade, deputy director (employment), Directorate of Employment & Training, told The Indian Express. The directorate is organising the job fair for the car manufacturer.
“We are in the process of issuing call letters to ITI passouts in the state for this job fair,” he added.
Malwade said this was not the first time that a large firm from outside Gujarat was scouting for workers for skilled positions from the state. “For recruiters, Gujarat is the best place, as we have a culture of industrial peace,” he said.
This is possibly one of the largest recruitment drives to be conducted by the car major after it declared a lock-out at the Manesar plant on July 21, 2012 following violence by workers. It had dismissed nearly 500 permanent workers and resumed work in August.
When contacted, Maruti Suzuki officials said the recruitment drive in the state is part of its pan-India drive being conducted by the company for the Manesar plant. “We have done recruitments in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Rajasthan as well,” said a senior company official.
For Maruti, which is planning a new manufacturing facility at Hansalpur in Ahmedabad, this move could possibly have long-term benefits. The workers hired from Gujarat could also be moved back to the state when the Rs 4,000-crore, Phase-I of the unit, is expected to be commissioned by 2015-16.
