He was well-supported by opener Wasim Jaffer (137 not out), who scored his second consecutive century today, having hit 171 against Gujarat in their last league game.
Tendulkar and Jaffer lifted Mumbai from 35 for two at one stage to a 270-plus total by the end of day's play, after putting on a 234-run stand for the third wicket.
Tendulkar, who recently retired from One-Day International cricket, looked in sublime form as he notched up his 18th Ranji century.
From word go, the veteran was playing his shots. He hit a six off Ketul Patel to bring up the fifty, while his century came off an Ambati Rayudu over as he ran hard for two runs.
Playing his 35th Ranji match for Mumbai, Tendulkar spent 296 minutes at the crease for a well-made 108 that came off 233 balls, and was studded with 10 hits to the fence and a six. He was castled by Baroda pacer Murtuza Vahora, four overs prior to the end of day's play.
This was Tendulkar's second ton of the season. He had hit 137 against Railways in a league match in November last year.
He is now one short of the Indian record held by Sunil Gavaskar, who has 81 first-class hundreds to his name. In Ranji Trophy, Gavaskar had scored 20 centuries.
After electing to bat, Mumbai lost opener Kaustubh Pawar (8) and one-down batsman Hiken Shah (9) cheaply.
But Tendulkar and Jaffer managed to consolidate the innings, and although the latter was lucky to get a life when he was dropped at slip by skipper Yusuf Pathan on 96, he played a responsible knock and would look to score some more runs tomorrow.
The Baroda bowlers struggled after picking up two early wickets even as Yusuf used as many as seven bowlers to get a breakthrough.
At stumps, Jaffer was unbeaten on 137 off 256 balls. His knock was laced with 16 fours and three sixes. Giving him company on the other end was Dhawal Kulkarni, who is yet to open his account.
For Baroda, Vahora chipped in with two wickets for 50 runs in 23 overs.
These people who criticize sachin are useless. Sachin is out of form and he is practicing in ranji trophy. Not like a sehwag or zaheer who all walk straight into Indian team after injury. When they play bad, you will ask them to play in Ranji firt. Now sachin trying in a Ranji and you say ranji in nothing? AND how abt the ishant babe or Jadeja the yougster or rohit the superstar with natural talent who are youngsers for so many years and still learning?? Ajith Agarkar will play far better than Rohit sharma. A fat yuvraj? and Raina who plays shortballs like a shuttle game? ask them to first practice in ranji than earning because of IPL.
oye ANISH instead of writing "We have too much..." you MUST have written "I have too much....." and be normal like other Indians and don't feel Shame on SIR SACHIN TENDULKAR (for that watch all cricket match played b/w 1989 and 2012 especially the batting of SIR SACHIN TENDULKAR) i m feeling shame on you beign an Indian how can one can one not feel, proud on SIR SACHIN TENDULKAR, a man who make us feel proud of beign an Indian in this whole world btw "you need to rest and we had too much from you" seriously OK ANISH
oye DINESH SINGH Sir Sachin Tendular will definitely score against our so-called Quality Ranji Team BOWLERS.Even the world's greatest bowlers have failed to stop SACHIN from scoring against them and started praising him......... so it's beyond beyond .....the limit of INDIAN Bowler to even think of stoping Sachin.... UNDERSTOOD..............................................................................................................if no (much expected from you) then read the views of any bowler of world about Sir Sachin .......... ok DINESH SINGH
Lets see if he score against quality Ranji team bowlers.
u blind folded man.. what u want to seewhether he can score aganist good bowlers...that man has 100 internatioal hundreds
VARUN and KVR i think you have just started watching cricket or maybe you are no fan of cricket how can you doubt someone like sachin? you should keep your mouth shut
Sachin is now looking for Gawaskar's record in Ranji..One century behind...He won't play Ranji after that..
He is trying to come back in ODI. If yes, than shame on him. Sachin for god sake just retire. We have too much from you and Media please stop any promotions on Sachin. He need to rest....for good from all the forms of Cricket.
A match is a match whether it is national or international. That critics should have to know that "SER janha vi jata hai wo Uska Ghar ban jata hai"-----
Many cricketers have regularly scored centuries in Ranji matches, but failed repeatedly in Tests. This century shows Sachin is now playing only for records. He should retire from all forms of cricket.
Lets say for example you are a software developer and you retire from your work, post that will you stop programming ? writing code? checking emails? The man is playing cricket coz he loves it not for records or anything other bull shit. And by the way he's practicing for the Auss test ahead. Do you not practice before an exam? Its the media which makes an issue, stop blaming it on Sachin. Its a cynical world!
Its too early to say that.. Its one thing to hit runs against a ranji side and that too against Baroda , the weaker one, and whole another to succeed against a quality opposition as Australia..
Any babe given the bat for this long would also have learnt to bat. Further Sachin hitting a century where it matters is important and not in a local match and this can never be a answer to the critics. kvr
