Men, women should be treated equally in society and this will avoid rape: Sunita Williams

“Men and women should be treated equally in society. This will avoid the sad incidences like the one that happened in Delhi recently,” said Sunita Williams, an acclaimed astronaut of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Addressing the student fraternity at Maharashtra Institute of Technology through video conferencing from the US, she said, “I never looked at myself as a woman in this male dominated career. I never tried to stand out as someone different and gave work my best shot. Instead of saying look at me, I am a woman, I concentrated on my work and that is what matters,” said Williams.

Williams broke down twice as she was overwhelmed by the reaction of students. “When we return to our cities, states or countries, we feel happy to be back home. But when I went to space and returned to earth, even though I landed in Khazajistan, I felt at home. The happiness of homecoming is overwhelming,” said Williams.

Urging students to choose a field of their interest, she said, “First step is to identify the field of your interest, then find the best organisation and work hard. Be creative, come up with new ideas and become a leader in whichever field you choose.”

Stating global warming as a major issue, she said she observed a significant change in earth during her recent journey to space as compared to her last visit in 2007 . “Population has increased and its effect can be seen on everything,” said Williams.

Talking about the advent of technology, Williams said, “The next generation will see people going to space more often as the traveling time will be greatly reduced. I hope to be part of the group that makes this dream possible.” She added, “To fasten a nut and bolt is very easy here but it may be very difficult or even impossible in the space. All the laws of nature and life are different in space. I am proud to be of Indian race and expect young Indians, especially girls to create history in the field of Science & Astronomy.”

She confessed that looking at the earth especially during the night and taking pictures was one of her favourite pastimes when in space. “Space travel makes you think out of the box and a different view can change various issues on earth,” she said.

Take precautions whether it is men or women after darkness and in isolated streets.Having a cautious approach will be good in the long run.It will avoid unpleasant incidents in one's life.

don't make that mistake by Intelligent on 04 Jan 2013

to think that if men and women have equal rights there will be no rapes sounds too naive... raped don't take place due to right issues, they happen due to animal like men's uncontrolled senses and that will not change just by changing so called rights of men and women.. what needs is proper education. what is going on today in the name of education is corruption. look at the so called advanced countries and see how many rapes and now shooting taking place..hmm... don't follow them or you are going the same way. Equality by Nandhini Ponnusamy on 04 Jan 2013

The discrimination is the first stage of all illegal activities against women. it actually starts at home by our own parents, though it is not to stop achieving things, but to keep us in safer place. but widely speaking, our society is not yet ready to accept the concept of equal rights for women and men. the more we insist and fight for the rights, the more we are suppressed. what i feel is men are sacred to compete with women and hence forcing them to stop doing things. I WISH OUR COUNTRY WILL BE A DEMOCRATIC IN ALL THE STAGES.

Women are not ready for equality in India by Suman on 04 Jan 2013

When comes to equality there are challenges in the society. Here are some examples: 1. In GYM womens timings are different then men. 2. In most religious places Men have to remove their top and have to go half naked where as for women there is no such rule. 3. Men and Women should use same toilet in offices and public toilets. 4. Women can wear Jeans, shirts and pants but men dont wear Saree or Salvar. These are only few things, if you bring equality then what happens in the society. Dont just think equality in Education and jobs other social things must be involved.

Equality among Men by PKB on 04 Jan 2013

Suni, you are partially right, but even if you grant equal status to men & women still there will be rapes, what you think even in US rapes do occur inspite of equality. Rape you cannot stop it, yes but we can control it to a larger extent. As we are all animals, it is bound to happen.
