Kalam was then scientific advisor to the Defence Minister. “One night during May 1996, I got a call from the PM House. I was told to meet PM Rao immediately. I had met him just two days before the announcement of general election results. He had then told me to be ready with Department of Atomic Energy and my team for N-test,” Kalam said.
Kalam said Rao had told him, “I am going to Tirupati. You wait for my authorisation to go ahead with the test. DRDO-DAE teams must be ready for action.”
But the election result was quiet different from what Rao had anticipated. “I was busy in Chandipur missile range when I got a call saying I must immediately meet PM designate Vajpayeeji with Rao,” Kalam said.
Pointing to smooth takeover of such an important programme, he said, “I witnessed a unique situation. The outgoing PM, Rao, asked me to brief the details of the nuclear programme to Vajpayee.”
Rao was ready for the test but had to wait till his end of term to decide whether or not to go ahead. in the 60 years of congress raj right after British raj, they finally had to hand over the gut crunching responsibilities to Atal Bihari Bajpayeeji & that too when neither of the congressmen could actually sign a go on the matter themselves. now being a congressmen isn't all that easy when the world around has been developing rapidly while the congressmen have been intentionally keeping their own motherland in desperation & utter poverty, it's really a hard work & one has to really give up on nationalism, self respect & humanity. being a congressmen is not easy especially when human loving & ultra nationalist people like Atalji are around. one has to buy away many mouths & sometimes even former presidents to claim some one else's hard earned. APJ Abdul Qalam doesn't need to defend his beloved congressmen becoz he wasn't the only person in the nation or in the administration back then
