Narendra Modi-Kapil Sibal thriller called off for now

Narendra Modi and Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal were involved in a public spat on the issue of providing low-cost 'Aakash' tablets to students under a HRD ministry project.

Ahmedabad The much-awaited event where Chief Minister Narendra Modi and Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal were to share dais has been called off.

Both leaders had consented to remain present at the foundation stone-laying ceremony of the Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (IIT-GN), on Saturday.

The ceremony was jointly organised by the Centre and Board of Governors IIT-GN, where Sibal was to deliver speech as the chief guest and Modi the presidential address.

“The foundation stone laying ceremony, scheduled to be held Saturday morning, has been called off,” Deputy Registrar of IIT-GN Rajesh Sahay said, without assigning any reason.

However, sources at the institute said both leaders, in separate letters to IIT-GN, have informed that they would not attend the event due to other urgent commitments.

“The event has been postponed and new date for the ceremony will be announced later,” they added.

Recently, the two leaders were involved in a public spat on the issue of providing low-cost “Aakash” tablets to students under a HRD ministry project. Modi had ridiculed the Centre’s “tall” promise of providing cheap PCs to students.

In a criticism of the poll promise of Gujarat Congress to give free laptops if voted to power, Modi had sarcastically said, “Kaash (if only), this Aakash tablet could land on earth. The lies (promise of free laptops by state Congress) they (Congress) are spreading now would hold some weight.”

“No Aakash tablets have come down on earth even after 11 months (of promise by the Centre). Now I realise why the gizmo was named Aakash,” the BJP leader had said earlier this month, punning on the word “Aakash” (sky).

Sibal, reacting to Modi’s jibes, promised he himself would present the version-2 of Aakash to Modi at a public event on September 22. “Modi may be rich in politics but he is poor at heart,” the Congress leader had said.

How can Modi and his followers could forget that there is no no development in rural and tribal areas of Gujarat? Modi has hired PR agencies to project himself as man of development and one who can become the PM but the reality on grass root is totally different. Modi has allowed industrialist to loot Gujarat and if he becomes PM, he will let entire world to loot India...

With respect to Human Development Index (HDI), Gujarat's story is devastating. The HDI for Gujarat, in 2008, was 0.527 and it ranked 10 { t} { h} among major states. Kerala stood first (HDI: 0.790), Himachal Pradesh scored 0.652, Punjab 0.605, Maharashtra 0.572 and Haryana 0.552. With respect to three HDI components - income, health and education - Gujarat does not present a shining story. In this respect, states like Kerala took the lead in every sector, while Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal did better than Gujarat.

It is found that inequality with respect to income, education and health is higher in Gujarat than some of the major states. Shockingly, in terms of hunger - as revealed by the 'State Hunger Index 2008' - Gujarat ranked 13th among 17 big states and worse than Orissa.

Chief minister Narendra Modi didn't spell out any apology for the 2002 riots, during his speech. But he gave indication that he wants this history to be buried. Addressing people before starting his fast on Saturday, Modi asked them to forget the past and be part of the development spree. His choice of words and tone of speech were aimed at conveying a sense of regret, especially to the Muslim community.
