Air France says no hope of survivors in Atlantic

Fernando De Noronha (Brazil) Air France has told families of passengers on Flight 447 that the jetliner broke apart and they must abandon hope that anyone survived, a grief counsellor said on Thursday as military aircraft tried to narrow their search for the remains of the plane.

Air France CEO Pierre-Henri Gourgeon told the families in a private meeting that the plane broke apart either in the air or when it slammed into the ocean, according to Guillaume Denoix de Saint-Marc, who was asked by Paris prosecutors to help counsel family members and was at the yesterday meeting.

The plane, carrying 228 people, disappeared after leaving Rio de Janeiro for Paris on Sunday night.

Investigators were relying heavily on the plane's automated messages to help reconstruct what happened to the jet as it flew through towering thunderstorms.

They detail a series of failures that end with its systems shutting down, suggesting the plane broke apart in the sky, according to an aviation industry official with knowledge of the investigation.

He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the crash. "What is clear is that there was no landing. There's no chance the escape slides came out," said Denoix de Saint-Marc, who heads a victims' association for UTA flight 772, shot down in 1989 by Libyan terrorists.

Gourgeon told families there were no survivors, according to Denoix de Saint-Marc.

New Air France debris found, explosion unlikely

Earlier, search crews flying over the Atlantic found debris from a crashed Air France jet spread over more than 55 miles (90 km) of ocean on Wednesday, reinforcing the possibility it broke up in the air.

Brazilian Defence Minister Nelson Jobim said the existence of large fuel stains in the water likely ruled out an explosion, undercutting speculation about a bomb attack.

"The existence of oil stains could exclude the possibility of a fire or explosion," he said at a news conference in Brasilia. "If we have oil stains, it means it wasn't burned." Experts said extreme turbulence or decompression during stormy weather may have caused the Airbus A330, which took off from Rio de Janeiro bound for Paris on Sunday night, to splinter over the ocean with 228 people on board.

Newly spotted traces of the plane included a 12-mile (20-km) fuel stain and various objects spread across a 3-mile (5-km) area, including one metallic object 23 feet (7 metres) in diameter. The Air France plane sent no mayday signals before crashing, only automatic messages showing electrical faults and a loss of pressure shortly after it entered stormy weather.

In Rio de Janeiro, Air France released a list of Brazilian passengers on board, excluding a few names by request of family members. A memorial mass will be held there on Thursday.

Is it possible to avoid Thats Inevitable? by Lakshmi. M on 05 Jun 2009

I feel a new technology has to be invented for such disasters some detector sort before 10 mins of fatality .. for Human safety in view, for eg: like the whole seat to parachute and on water to serve as life belt.. but for what about split second.. Will man be able to invent something for such fatality too. I pray and Hope for Good, May all those who lost their lives , their soul rest in peace..

Airbus safety concerns by sumit on 04 Jun 2009

Some of us may recollect that when an Airbus crashed in Bangalore about twenty years ago, an Airbus Industrie spokesman rejected questions about design problems by saying that sophisticated aircraft could not be flown by "camel drivers" (i.e. Indians).

Air France Plane Crash by Abdul Majid Zargar on 04 Jun 2009

The crash of Air France Jetliner over Atlantic has once again raised the safety element of air travel.Modern Airplanes are thought to be virtually accident free but alas such beliefs are only delusions. What is the point in placing safety air bags beneath the seats when they cannot be used in case of a crash in water.Aircraft manufacturers may have to think now to convert the whole seat in a parashut

Retrieving the Black Box by PAYYANS on 04 Jun 2009

It is indeed tragic that many precious lives have been lost in this terrible crash. Retrieving the flight data recorder is the only way to find out what caused the catastrophic crash. As of now it seems to be a nearly impossible task to retrieve the balck box from the ocean floor. Considering that international flights criss cross the oceans, aircraft manufacturing companies should now consider incorporating some fail-proof floatation device into the black box to prevent its sinking to the ocean floor in the event of an air disaster (God forbid) over oceans. This will make recovery of the box easier.

air france - tragedy of innocent lives by ramakrishnan on 04 Jun 2009

As the real cause of plane crash still to be investigated and find out evidences are not enough to come to a conclusion what went wrong. No survivor and not finding black box is also making tough for investigators to come to a conclusion whether due to bad stormy whether or crew or external hijack - terror or a technical fault. Mysteries still prevail. Innocent lives are gone and survivor's body and more plane debris are to be surfaced even in later period. What is our contribution only to pay for the peace of innocent lives and for their families. World has reached at such a stage that still we do not have control. what are the possibilities of crash may have to be investigated and accounted the responsibles soon
