New Delhi The Delhi Police is ready for its first modern, hi-tech police station, which will come up at the Indira Gandhi International Airport this year. The police station will be WiFi enabled and have a gym and an exclusive lounge for police officers.

The proposal, which was made two years ago, got final clearance from the Ministry of Home Affairs this month.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (IGIA) J S Deswal said: “We have a proposal for a modern and aesthetic building. The set up will match the décor of the new airport — Terminal 3.”

The police station will be multi-storeyed and will house the IGI police station and the office of Deputy Commissioner of Police (IGIA). The contract for the construction has been awarded to National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC) Ltd.

Police sources said the MHA has sanctioned Rs 5 crore for the construction.

Sources said a few more approvals are awaited and construction is expected to begin by the end of March. “There are detailed provisions for various amenities to be provided at the police station and the building will be in tune with international standards,” a senior police officer said.

The new police station will come up next to the multi-level car parking facility at Terminal 3 of the IGI Airport.

“We wanted to ensure that the police station is visible. The existing police station is a far away from T3. Many a time, visitors, including foreign nationals, find it difficult to access the police station because of this. Sometimes visitors don’t know where the police station is because it’s not visible. The new set up will be visible to passengers from inside T3,” the officer said.

Sources said the police station will have a cafeteria and an exclusive lounge for police officers. This will be separate from the lounge for visitors and complainants.
