No Indian varsity among top 200 universities

London, November 12: No Indian varsities, including the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology, figure among world's top 200 universities this year, while six Chinese universities were listed, signalling the rapid stride the Communist giant is making in higher education.

Harvard University tops the league table followed by Cambridge and Oxford at second and third positions respectively.

The top 10 universities are all either in the United States or the United Kingdom, a survey has found.

Besides China, other Asian countries figuring in the list of world-class universities are Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea.

The IITs, which figured regularly in all the previous surveys, since The Times Higher - Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings began three years ago, have fallen off the map this year partly because of a change in evaluation norms.

For this year's survey, individual IITs were assessed, and not the "IIT system as a whole." And none of the seven IITs was considered good enough to find a place among the top ranking world universities, according to the survey.

However, IIT Delhi and IIT Mumbai find mention among the world's top 50 technology institutions, with the former at 37 and latter at 33 -- both way behind China's Tsinghua University, placed at 16.

The six Chinese universities included among the world's top 200 are Peking University, Tsinghua University (also listed among the 50 best technology institutions), Fudan University, Nanjing University, the University of Science and Technology of China and Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

The survey covering 28 countries, confirms the English-speaking world's dominance in higher education with America and Britain leading the pack.

That reflects our mindset in faculty appointments in our Universities by Rajendra on 11 Jun 2009

Very often, I am sorry, almost invariably the new faculties appointed in the Universities are not qualified. They are not only supposed to teach, but also conduct "top quality" research published in top ranking peer reviewed journals.Having had very good academic record in the US, I wanted to come back takeup a University job in India. But I came to know later that they were offered to some internal candidate whose recodr either in teaching and or in research is very poor. In some Universities, they want the candidate to personally come to the interview. People abroad can't afford to come to an interview just only to be rubbished later. After all, international travel can't be done frequently with the current academic responsibilities and the cost and time involved. In days of telephonic interviews for academic jobs our Universities are lagging behind. Appointments are a sham. Once a poor candidate is appointed, he will make sure that our Universities do not fare well internationally.

No room for reservations by Sathya on 13 Nov 2007

There should be no room for reservations in IIT's.This is a game of "Survival of the fittest" Whoever deserves the eligibility criteria( not the reservation) will make their entry into the IIT.In terms of education and knowledgeg acquiring, where comes the caste bar??

Reservation for Muslims by Mrs Chaarualata on 13 Nov 2007

Last year IITs and IIMs gave reservation to muslims from backdoor. This has brought down the quality of education.Islamic congress is teaching kooran in the college and university.

99.9929239249% reservation will raise standards of comnunal Hindoosthani universities ruled by Bramans by J. Basu on 13 Nov 2007

Manniya Arjun Sing ji, Karate ji, Kormaneethi ji, etc. was trying to raise level of IIT IIM AIIMS etc. by allowing talented minroties,OBC,SC and ST to get 83.123456% seats and improve standards of all comnunal Hindoosthani universities. But uppper cast Hindhooo Bramans are creating obstacle in progress by non meritorious general quota teachers and students in these horrible places. To improve standards of all IIT etc. and improve teacher morale, immediately 99.86879568% reservation for minroties OBC ST and SC must be done and all teachers who are not minroties OBC SC or ST kicked out and replaced by leading educationalists hand chosen by seclular forces of Madrasas and Chrches under the leadership of Bamponth, as they have done in Bongal schools colleges and gorvernmernt institutions. Also all students going to foregn cuntries to study must also be reserved for minroties OBC SC and ST to raise standards.

Reservation criteria suggested by Mr. J Basu by Rajendra on 11 Jun 2009

I agree with Mr. Basu. But I think we have to ensure the number of children born also has to be similarly regulated. We have to amend the constitution to allow for 99% of child birth in India to be reserved only for OBC, SC and ST.

physics by Dr.P.Madhusudana Rao on 13 Nov 2007

It is quiet surprising to note from the survey that no Indian University is listed in top 200. One of the reasons for this could be the software field which has spread the entire country where in the entire young generation is settling

lack of interest by Abhay Gudi on 13 Nov 2007

it is not so surprising to see that our Indian Universities are not among top 200. the main reason is that now a days each and every engineering student wants goes to get a degree which will help him to get a good job later. No one is interested in perusing good knowledge. the growth of software jobs in India is another serious issue too.
