Washington Concerned over the rise in tension between India and Pakistan over the brutal killing of two Indian soldiers, the US said it has been counselling both governments to de-escalate the situation and has instructed its envoys there to work in this direction.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton "talked to our South Asia people" about it on Tuesday and yesterday, State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland told reporters. "She has instructed our Ambassadors to work with those governments, which they are doing."

"There were calls made at the ambassadorial level in both countries," Nuland said, as she urged for calm between the two countries.

"We are concerned about reports of violence along the Line of Control in Kashmir. It's our understanding that the governments of India and Pakistan are now talking and trying to work through these issues at a high level," Nuland said.

The United States is urging both sides to take steps to end the violence, she said.

"We continue to strongly support any efforts to improve relations between the two countries. We've also discussed these latest incidents with both governments, urged them to talk to each other and urged calm," she said.

The US is counseling both countries to work to de-escalate tension, Nuland said.

"We have been counseling both governments to de-escalate, to work through this issue, to continue the consultations between them at a high level that we understand are ongoing now. Violence is not the answer for either country," she said.

Responding to a question, Nuland said that the US favours that the two countries should talk to each other to resolve their issues.

"Our view is that India and Pakistan have made pretty good progress in recent years, in working through a number of difficult issues, including opening of the trade relations, etc, that they are now engaged at a high level on these recent incidents," Nuland said.

"If they can work it out themselves, that's obviously best. If both parties were interested in support from the UN, we'd obviously support that as well. But at the moment, we're urging them to talk to each other," Nuland said.

Earlier Pentagon Press Secretary George Little said: "We all hope that we can maintain peace and stability in the region. The Secretary (of Defence) has affirmed that on visits throughout that region, including to India."

The issue of "tensions, historical tensions" between India and Pakistan, is one that Defence Secretary Leon Panetta, knows very well, he said in response to a question.

His remarks came after Pakistani soldiers, in a "provocative" attack, crossed into Indian territory in Poonch sector of Jammu and Kashmir and ambushed an Indian patrol killing two soldiers, one of whom was decapitated.

"On the issue of terrorism, let me say that we stand with everyone in the world to include those in India and in Pakistan who take a very hard line against terrorists who want to kill civilians, whether it's Pakistani, Indian or American civilians," Little said.

US-SENSIBLE UNLIKE OUR POLITICIANS by N.ASTI on 10 Jan 2013

US has ordered MMS and his Chamcha ministry to maintain peace on the LOC.This UPA govt has indicated that as slaves of US it will act.US politicians are not foolish as their Indian counterparts. They see their Nation's interest first. While foolish Congress politicians try to see their MFN-Pakistan interest first under the guise of peace-talks,probably to siphon the money for defense to Swiss-bank or somewhere in Italy.

Indian Problem Indian Solution by KK singh on 10 Jan 2013

Keep a million man army in Kashmir--permanently station the soldiers. Remove article 370 in Kashmir citing high risk to Homeland security. India should make these changes. Can-not depend on US or UN to help them.

Yawn by Prashant on 10 Jan 2013

Its our territory. Its our problem. Why should we seek out US condemnation?

Dr. by Avneesh Tyagi on 10 Jan 2013

US intervention is not demanded and certainly not welcome. But due to a weak external affair ministry of India, always the issue related with Pakistan and its terroristic activities slips away to the hands of US government, and they start dictating India for talk with Pakistan. India has been talking for a long time now because India has to act as a sensible nation. However, if India cannot protect its own citizens or soldiers and its sovereignty I must say that it is a sign of weak and action less governess. In diplomatic language all options are open! But in my language all options must be used to retaliate. It may not be as practical as it may sounds. However, Pakistan has crossed the line of our patient several times in the past as well. All we did is summoning Pak officials and waiting for the response. And as a result we get back stabbed as usual. I am not a war monger person but if the peace can be brought by the war let it be then. We waited long enough; we used all diplomacy and have seen the result. I am really dying to see what the GOI will decide to go further with the issue. However, I request to the GOI that please stop all ties ( I mean all) with Pakistan right now until it%u2019s too late.

CMDEMNATION BY US by hanvis on 10 Jan 2013

americans are concerned with their own security. They send miltary all over the world to safeguard their citizens. Inda has not condemend US military intervention .It is for the Indian Government to take action against Pakistan. In this respect we should follow US policy.

Who is US ? by Khan on 10 Jan 2013

Who is US and why do we want condemnation from US? Fuck them and then send one missile inside Pakistan military base and say sorry it is by mistake - They will learn a good lesson

The Wild West Gone Mad by Rudresh M N on 10 Jan 2013

First start putting news like US is big brother to all of us.... They are the biggest terrorist group in the world. Masters of Organised crime and destabilizing any country... I never understood, why do they come poking their nose, each time there is some nieghboring issues... When they need to decide, they never take any suggestions from any other in the world. India should acting first then talking... U screw them militarily immediately and tell them that we are ready to talk...

SHAMEFUL TO OUR GOVT. by R.C.KASHYAP on 10 Jan 2013

It is understood that America always favors their AGENT & PET (PAK) in their benefit to control over Asia through this agent. They never see towards INDIA even though world knows that the PAK is TERRORIST country. It is shameful to our present govt.if they will not take strong action & they (govt.) should not bent in front of America & rethink on voice of America.

America has no Right to Speak by Pankaj Bajaj on 10 Jan 2013

I think America has no right to speak on this issue as they are not invited by neither India nor Pakistan. This is the problem of India and let us resolve the issue in our way. America need not to tell us what to do and what not to???

UNPROVEKED ATTACK BY PAKSITANI ARMY by sankaran on 10 Jan 2013

IF THE SOLDIERS KILLED WERE AMERICANS, THEN A DOZEN OF DRONES WOULD HAVE ATTACKED PAKISTAN. WHY THIS DOUBLE STANDARD.AMERICA MUST CONDEMN THE ATTACK BEFORE THEY GIVE US ANY ADVISE.INDIAN GOVT MUST USE THEIR DESECRATION AND DO THE NEEDFUL. LETS NOT ALLOW THE AMERICANS TO INTERFERE IN THESE SENSITIVE MATTERS.

US is no one to tell what India should do by nikunt on 10 Jan 2013

What the hell...what US will do in this...Its our issue and it should be us who should decide what steps should be taken. They were not US citizens but Indians...

FOR AMERICA, INDIA AND PAK ARE SAME !! by ANIYAN on 10 Jan 2013

YES, THAT IS WHAT AMERICA IS !!! AMERICA TRIED ITS BEST TO GET INDIA INVOLVED IN AFGHANISTAN TO GET THE INDIAN FORCES KILLED THERE FOR NO PURPOSE OF OUR'S!! THEY COULD NOT SUCCEED AND NOW THEY FEEL THAT BOTH PAK AND INDIA ARE SAME FOR THEM. SO, INDIA SHOULD NOT EXPECT ANY CONDEMNATION BUT ESTABLISH CONTACTS AND UPDATE ALL THE EUROPEAN AND THE NEIGHBOURING COUNTRIES THROUGH THEIR DIPLOMATIC MISSION AND GO AHEAD WITH THE BEST BEFITTING ACTION AS DEEMED FIT. INDIA DID BATTLE FOR CREATING A BANGLADESH. CAN IT NOT BATTLE FOR ITS OWN MEN?

I wonder what would have be US's reaction to this???? by Rohan on 10 Jan 2013

Pakistan Killings by Karan on 10 Jan 2013

I think its high time we stop running to our Mommy (US) every time pakistan does this kind of heinous act. India should take a strong stand and give befetting reply to this act.

India should take it's own decision by KD on 10 Jan 2013

Why should India depend on US for teahcing a lesson to Pakistan, while claiming to be a Super Power? Our politicians need media & public pressure behind them to wake up and do their job. India should take it's own decision in its natioanl interest and teach those a lesson not to dare in future. US has its own interest for which it gives millions of Dollars as aids to Pakistan and wants the two asian countries to talk. US would have known the pain if same thing would have happened with it's own soldiers. But India should not wait for any third country to solve the bilateral issue which has been going on for 50 years and take all efforts including offensive action to stop any country even thinking to take such coward steps on Indian soldiers.

USA is hand in glove with Pakistan by Anil Gupta on 10 Jan 2013

Pakistan was carved out of Indian peninsula by western powers so that they could checkmate India after independence.Whenever there was a war between India and Pakistan it was American weapons hat were used by Pakistan against India.Whether it was Paton Tanks or Sabre Jets. All were used against India. And America knows it very well.Still they keep on arming Pakistan. It is this negative policy of USA that is giving them trouble. They created Taliban. And Al Quaida too was created by Pakistan in full knowledge of USA.In Hindi there is a couplet: Boye Ped Babool ka, to Aam Kahan se aaye?( As shall you sow, so shall you reap).

What would the US do if it was in India's shoes? by Amit Sharma on 10 Jan 2013

I wonder, what action would US take if some country had done the same to US soldiers?

US response by sans on 10 Jan 2013

1.Send in the carrier fleet and anchor it really close to the enemy country. 2.Wait for even the slightest provocation while asking to hand over those responsible. 3.Bomb the country for 6 months. 4.Send in the army to capture the person responsible. [all this while the whole world acts as if nothing is happening, games and movies will be released showing how awesome they are.] Period
