New Delhi Director David Dhawan's son Varun says having contacts in the industry does not guarantee a movie.

The 24-year-old is making his acting debut with Karan Johar's "Student of The Year" alongside newbies Siddharth Malhotra and Alia Bhatt.

"I agree it was much easier for me because I have a platform but you may know many people in the industry and they will ask you to come to their office, offer coffee, but not a movie. So if Karan didn't see anything in me he wouldn't have cast me. Being a star son only doesn't help," Varun said.

In the film, the actor plays the role of a rich brat named Rohan Nanda, who doesn't listen to anybody and likes to do things in his own way.

Varun worked as an assistant director on the sets of "My Name Is Khan" and later went on for training under Barry John and did a few short films before making his debut.

"Student Of The Year" is set to hit the theatres on October 19.
