Rahul Gandhi likely to join govt: Sources

There have been repeated demands from within the Congress that Rahul Gandhi play a 'larger role' in the organisation and the government.

New Delhi Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi today met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh amid talk of a Cabinet reshuffle.

While there was no official word as to what transpired at the meeting, the Prime Minister has been time and again inviting the young leader to join the government.

There have been repeated demands from within the Congress that Gandhi play a "larger role" in the organisation and the government.

The meeting comes a day after Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had separate meetings with President Pranab Mukherjee.

There has been speculation about a reshuffle in the Cabinet for quite some time now, especially after the exit of Trinamool Congress ministers both at the levels of Cabinet and Ministers of State levels.

There have been berths vacated by DMK representatives A Raja and Dayanidhi Maran in the last two years after their names cropped in the 2G scam. However, DMK President M Karunanidhi has recently made clear that his party will not not like to reclaim their lost berths.

Congress sources said that the reshuffle and induction could be largely from the party. There is speculation that some young faces, considered close to Rahul, like Manicka Tagore and Meenakshi Natarajan could be inducted into the council of ministers.

SHOULD ANYONE CARE? by Yakob J on 17 Oct 2012

The man comes with no qualifications for a cabinet post except that he belongs to a particular family. The Congress party has fared poorly on all counts and now we possibly have another family scam brewing at their doorstep. When he went to Harvard, can anyone show that he graduated? Whether Rahul sits in the cabinet or not, should one really care? The public in India can only grow tired of these politicians. Let me say no more, as I wish he may prove me wrong.
