BJP MP Ramesh Bais. (TV grab)

Raipur A BJP MP today said the rape of grown-up girls and women might be understandable but if someone does this to an infant, he should be hanged.

He said rape of minor is a heinous crime and those who commits such crime should be hanged.

"The rape of grown-up girls and women might be understandable but if someone does this to an infant, it is a heinous crime and the offenders should be hanged (barabari ya bade logo ke sath balatkar samajh me ata hai, lekin nabalig bachhiyo ke sath is tarah ka jaghanya apradh karma. Inko to fasi par latka dena chahiye)", MP Ramesh Bais told reporters referring to the rape case involving minor inmates of a government-run residential school in Kanker district of the state.

Asked about the MP's remarks, the state's main opposition Congress said assault on women, whether she is a child or a grown-up, is a heinous crime.

Congress spokesman Shailesh Nitin Trivedi said "assault on anyone is a heinous crime. The statement (of Bais) is objectionable and we condemn this".

Bais said the incident like the one in Kanker happened in several places but they were not reported.

"Just terminating the employees will not bring back the honour of the victims. The accused in the case should be given stringent punishment", Bais said.

“The incident of Delhi gang rape has rocked everyone to think over such crimes. The incident of Chhattisgarh is a matter of shame,” the MP said.

The MP also suspected the involvement of senior officials and claimed that for the past several months the girls were being sexually assaulted and the concerned officials were unaware of it.

The incident of sexual assault on minor inmates of the government-run residential school for tribal girls in Jhaliyamari village of Kanker district came to light last

Sunday.

So far six people, including two teachers, have been arrested in connection with the crime.

According to police, the medical examination has confirmed rape on nine inmates out of 40 who are living in a hostel.

rape by zulaikha rafiq on 13 Jan 2013

Bus Ride At Night -- A Scream Nirbhay Abhay Amaanat I am Jyoti Daughter of India Student in Delhi Of 23 years I was raped By six beasts in human disguise Beaten raped bitten abused Thrown out in the chill night Unclothed bleeding My insides torn Exposed to shocked and fearful glances speeding away in nervous shame. I would have died Of pain but lived To ask you if your manhood Was summed up as a pack In hounding a woman Molesting and violating Another human being Tearin g apart one of God%u2019s creatures So like your own mother Who nurtured you in her womb And nursed you until you grew up Enough to defile her body and her soul? For shame -- I died an innocent victim Of dehumanized chauvinism And you lived to be haunted By your own savage vandalism Forever becoming symbols Of all that is sick and senseless Of all that is brute and inhuman Of all that makes our Motherland cry Tears of shame At the abomination Created by her own sons.

unacceptable statement by Dr B Sundara on 11 Jan 2013

How anyone can say that rape of grownups is understandable? What is there to understand? A rape is a rape where a women is put to mental and physical torture of unimaginable degree. If she survives, she has to carry the stigma for her lifetime. And, many in our society exploit such women. Hence a rapist deserves the harshest punishment.Training women in self defence and providing them with somekind of arms for self protection may be considered.

BJP MP's comment on Rape of Monors by S.Madhavan on 11 Jan 2013

I think the media is hounding Mr Bais quite unnecessarily. With the sort of media hunting for sensationalism and aggressive Reporting being the order of the day it becomes all the more necessary for politicians to very carefully choose their words and expressions. In the subject case perhaps Mr. Bais has by no means justified rape of any kind but apparently has expressed anguish at the atrocities extending even to children and infants. Media has to realize that sensationalism will surely loose its sheen and its credibility will be eroded slowly but surely if at all the particular component of media is interested in long term credibility as a vslue to be aspired for given the commercial nature of media enterprises.

Biased reporting by josh on 10 Jan 2013

Wholly agree with BC and AJ - being leftist/"secular", they are reluctant to call a spade a spade. The headline and story are typical of the propagandist reporting againsr BJP, and Hindus in general, as practised by the mainstream English press. The problem with educated Hindus, due to the nature of the religion's inclusive belief system, is they become liberal and make allowances for the other side - this is wholly different from those belonging to Semitic/Abrahamic societies. Hence they prefer to support a chronically and unabashedly corrupt government that panders to extremist minorities and is run from abroad (Italy currently), in the mistaken belief that "communalism" is a greater threat to India. The label of communalism, BTW as far as I can see, is based only on 1) the Ayodhya incident against property due to intransigence from the minority community 2) the Gujarat incident against persons following the massacre of 50 unarmed pilgrims by the minority community.

I am afraid to have adult girl children under BJP in power by raj on 10 Jan 2013

Well what several BJP leaders talking are not something they are babbling. It is coming straight from their heart. The way they think of women, girls etc of any race and religion. Will a lion differentiate between a ashramam grown deer and a wild deer. The moment it sees a deer it will become restless and kill it. Same goes for BJP.

Exactly, think before commenting by bc on 10 Jan 2013

i came here to comment on the stupidity of interpreting that he said it was ok to rape an adult. and now i find AJ has done that already. so i would raise another question: isn't what he said painfully obvious? why is the media, including the ones in this paper, acting so immature? this perhaps is the first ever time i came across a real instance of 'my-comments-were-misinterpreted', a standard issue reason that one sees the very next day of a stupid comment being made. i sure hope this wont appear as it is in IE. to clarify, i am a leftist and this MP's party is among my enemy no.1

Is culture and customs at the heart of the rape issue? by Elijah on 10 Jan 2013

Under normal conditions, the ratio of men to women in any country is pretty close to 50% each. This means that for every male born there is a female that could become his mate. Of course, in India this ratio has been and is badly skewed so that there are fewer women to men, and this presents a serious social problem, in that a large number (possibly 20-30 million men) will never have a mate and will never have children of their own. But the question that all Indians, including the politicians and even academia, have failed to address is the question why? They are all trying their best to ignore foeticide of female babies, and gender selection by parents, where boys over girls who are seen as liabilities, because of the oppressive and lecherous social custom of "dowry". To avoid financial ruin, parents selfishly choose boys for another reason, and that is the boys are the magnet for dowry, and give to parents an economic advantage. Fix this problem and help reduce rape.

Wisdom from BJP MP Ramesh Bais by Shiv on 10 Jan 2013

It is indeed funny that such a stupid comment comes from the only elite and untouchable class of India. Without trying to put the right words in Sh Ramesh's mouth , it is sheer immaturity of such law makers that has permitted the respected women folk to be treated as objects of lust and made to suffer the ultimate indignity of rape. The present vacillation by the ruling conglomerate called UPA over the degree of punishment to be meted out to the rapists also highlights the weakness and vulnerability faced by Congress party in seeking inhouse consensus from it's allies on such an issue. The statement made by Sh Ramesh highlight one positive to be taken into account; that is to provide harsher sentence for the rape committed against the minors and possibly death for offenders against infants below 2 years of age.

Think before you comment! by Aj on 10 Jan 2013

Though I am not defending him, Everyone has to understand that his emphasis was on "rape with a minor is unimaginable!" not on that 'rape with a adult is understandable' . There is a difference between 'OK' & 'understandable'. Think before you react. Think about it. he said He also said 'rape of minor is a heinous crime and those who commits such crime should be hanged.' Why this is not a headline? Think! Media is making all these sensational news just to confuse and take the attention from real issue. The real issue is law & order problem, negligence at every level, No accountability! But the news only contain what he said or someone else said and twisting it to make it hit! What he said was like some kids got killed in US in recent shooting, someone would say "why kids?" doesn't mean he is okay with killing adults! Well, I leave it up to you guys how you interpret my comment! Thanks! And how you different When you say "someone rape his wife" & u consider yourself humans! Good going!

Shameless Idiot is our MP by Prathiba the Great on 10 Jan 2013

What that guy is saying? Is it normal to rape his mom??

infant by sikandr on 10 Jan 2013

There wont be any savage and heinious crime than rape of an infant. This should be treated as the rarest of rare and in that capital punishment should be appropriate.

Wisdom from BJP MP Ramesh Bais by Jacob on 10 Jan 2013

What sort of pathetic logic is this. Is he arbiter of morality for our country. Will he tolerate such 'indulgence',if his family women are involved? High time BJP issues gag orders against such people with perverted logic and saves its remaining prestige.

Log. Off. by Amin Khan on 10 Jan 2013

Your H'ble MP Ramesh what do you mean by rape of matured girl. Well Indian matured girl are well self respected to Indian culture. Dont compare Indian girl with the Westerners. They are grown and well respected from their elders. You mean that any matured girl who is raped because she is matured. What types of MP are you. Rape is rape whether matured or immature we in Indian society cant bear all this type or animal things. All whether matured or immatured the culprits should be hanged to death. When a 23 years young girl died because of raped the MP, Judges can't take the decision. Its a shamed on our society what laws we talking more about.

Rapists are the cancer of society. by Marek Labin on 10 Jan 2013

Rapists are the cancer of society. And a cancer cut out everything the doctor for the patient survives. This would allow the government order the death penalty for any rapist. Only in this way, Indian society can be healthy again.

Let this guy experience it by Pehelwan on 10 Jan 2013

Insanity at its peak by Inzy Bhai on 10 Jan 2013

I wonder how he would feel if someone were to rape his wife / mother / grown up daughter. He should be castrated for these inane comments. It only proves that our political class is probably the crassest in the world. We should hang our heads in shame for electing & eulogizing idiots like these.

Rape of Grown up's is understandable by arvind on 10 Jan 2013

According to the Hon'able MP, the Laws should be subject to the victims age? Does that mean that a murder of a person aged 65 or more should not attract death penalty/life imprisonment? OR rape of a woman aged above "X" should not be termed as a rape? Such remarks are a mockery of our system, Law and displays the mind set of the speaker. They are confused and need to be gagged. At a time when crime rate is all time high, the leaders and the various political parties should resolve to create an atmosphere of safety and peace instead of creating a Political stunt of the peoples desire for Justice. They issue such statements just to gain popularity by attracting media attention and later apologies. There should be some kind of control on speech where the nation is concerned. A mere apology or clarification should not be the end of it. At least, the EC or The Speaker of the House or the court should impose some monetary penalty on such comments to disuade them in future.

Heartless coward by nick on 10 Jan 2013

These insensitive idiots and so called leaders who go against the concern of humanity towards women are probably the ones or more likely may already had committed in raping women and even minors themselves. They are one of the criminals That's why they say what they say so that they can continue getting away without punishment and justice. Stop degrating women they are the one who brought you to life and nutured you to begin with. Real men only fight with other men with their own kind of strength not on the defenceless women and girls.

regarding rape by Ravina Sharma on 10 Jan 2013

No rape should be understandable not to a male, female whether they are adults or infants. Touching somebody private belongings without their consent should be against the law. Indian needs to take rape more seriously and have more severe punishment for all committing the crime
