Barasat (WB) Asian Games gold medalist Pinki Pramanik, who was embroiled in a controversy surrounding her gender, was today charged with rape and cheating by the police after medical tests established that the athlete is a male.

The police action came after it submitted in a court a medical report on the gender determination tests which showed that Pinki, now on bail, is a male.

Based on the report of the medical test done by a board of doctors at the state-run SSKM hospital in Kolkata, the police filed a charge sheet against Pinki charging the athlete with rape and cheating as well as accusing her of holding out threats.

Pinki was accused by her live-in partner Anamika Acharya of being a male who raped her, which led to Pinki's arrest on June 14 and an order for medical examination to confirm the gender was issued.

The former middle-distance runner, who won the 4x400 m relay gold in 2006 Doha Asian Games, was freed from jail on July 11 pending disposal of all cases.

Pinki's earlier reports of gender tests were inconclusive both at a private nursing home at Barasat as well as at Barasat general hospital.

The case was referred to the state-run SSKM hospital, but facility for chromosome pattern test was unavailable there too. Later, the test was concluded at Hyderabad, police said.

The athlete's arrest and imprisonment earlier sparked an outcry across the state over gender discrimination and the manner of conducting the tests.

Disgusting police by S R Moharana on 13 Nov 2012

Article should put facts clearly. %u201CPinki is neither a male nor a female. Pramanik is a male pseudo hermaphrodite. It is genetic disorder. That%u2019s the medical opinion. It%u2019s now for the court to deliberate,%u201D Dr BN Kahali, board chairman, said.

sex detemination by V.K.Sekharan on 13 Nov 2012

Both male and female can have chromosomes in excess of their gender. Females have to shave like males due to hair growth But that does not make her a male. Both the genders exibit certain characters of the other gender due inbalance of hormones. If Pinki is male how she wa allowed to participate in Asian games. If so how suddenly she has become a male Proper and solid tests should be conducted to determine the gender.

10 seconds to prove. by Sam on 13 Nov 2012

Anyone could easily prove if one is a male or female in 10 seconds. It took more than 4 months for the Govt.? There is something really fishy in there. Pinky had earlier told that there is a Minister involved in grabbing her land through that girl by putting false charges on her. How can they conclude that she is a male by a chromosome test? Maybe she has some male features or chromosomes which is quite possible. Such a worst helm of affairs in India. Pathetic.

Takes time I suppose by Siva on 12 Nov 2012

Does it really take months to decide whether a person is a male or female? If it does take, then there is no reason to believe in the reports.

How True by Swapan Chakravarthy on 12 Nov 2012

How true! It is Making mountain out of a molehill. To determine gender of a person we need chromosome test. And I wonder who has certified the report!

What do you think? by Hem on 12 Nov 2012

Siva, in India getting reports in months is far better than getting in years. :)
