Rats bite off officer’s toe at Army hospital

New Delhi A young lieutenant who led an operation in Handwara in Jammu and Kashmir in which two militants were killed less than a month ago, had his toe bitten off by rats at the Army Base Hospital in the capital on Saturday.

The 24-year-old officer belonging to the elite 9 Para (The Indian Express is not naming him to protect his identity) suffered a bullet injury in the spine during the Handwara encounter on September 25, which left him paralysed from below the waist.

The lieutenant was brought to Army Base Hospital here for treatment. On Saturday night, after he was moved from the intensive care unit to the rehabilitation centre of the hospital, his toe was reportedly chewed off by rats.

With his lower body being paralysed, the officer did not realise that his toe had been bitten off. The incident was discovered only this morning after the medical staff noticed that his foot was bleeding. A close examination revealed bite marks that confirmed that the toe had been chewed off by rats.

The officer is now undergoing preventive treatment for rabies. While there have been complaints of rodents in the hospital in the past, this is the first case of rats causing serious injury to a patient.

An outraged military community has registered a strong protest at the hospital. Sources in the Army said the incident is being viewed very seriously and an informal inquiry has begun to fix responsibility.

“We are very concerned. Strict action will be taken against those found responsible,” said a senior Army officer.

It is believed that some heads will roll at the Army Base Hospital, given that the incident took place in what is considered to be one of the better Army hospitals in the country.

Is is worth by Khanna on 23 Oct 2012

today the young officer might be thinking what did he get in return .A rat bite, a doctor telling him that he will not be able to walk ever . at the end we are un grateful nation whose memory is very short lived . yes the staff and people resposible for this need to be punished .But why can't such soliders be treated in private hopspitals where our ministers who are in coma can lay for 8 months and the govt is bearing the expenses so why can't such brave hearts who do not think twice before making a scarifice get the best treatment

Every morning handing and taking over of patients care takes place between night duty MNS and day duty MNS.In that particular ward they both are very much responsible for the unfortunate thing happened. The commandant or the responsible doctor of the concerned ward can not be held responsible instead.

a mns take care of 70 patitent in a ward. nursing assitants who are suppossed to work in wards are never detailed to discharge theit duties in wards rather they are kept for other unauthorised work to please the doctors. than how a mns can at all responsible?

Rates bit off an officer's toe by Ramesh Rayen on 22 Oct 2012

Even in military hospital this is the case, what would be for ordinary hospitals? In chennai rats bit off a new born child..........

management of armed forces hospitals by absonline on 22 Oct 2012

Reported mismanagement of armed forces hospitals makes a strong case for command of these hospitals by all-arms officers with doctors and specialists manning their own specialities. this would ensure ultra efficient hospitals with people doing jobs as per their area of expertise.

worst hospital by shiv on 22 Oct 2012

BHDC has worst possible facilities. No waiting room for labor room in night. negative attitude of nursing staff. aayaa charge hefty amount from lady patients in collusion with MNS. doctor's are not at all concerned. its high time MNS be scrapped and shown their way back to JCO status. AMC be scrapped of powers it has. a lot of negativity needs to be sorted out.... is someone listening??

Army Doctors by brinda on 22 Oct 2012

I agree with Aditya. Its a well known, the Doctors & Medical Core Staff at all Military Hospitals misbehave with Military Persons, insult them & use the Jawans who are admitted there as personal servants & labourers for menial jobs by extending their stay even after they get fit. Military doctors behave more like Super Stature Officers & hardly as doctors. They all become Colonel & Generals, fly flags on their staff cars & even on private cars. It is also a daily scene at the infamous Army Hospital & Base Hospital, where the Babus & their families come like VIPs, get received by the Commandants & HODs, who have no time for our glorious wounded Jawans. The staff steal the belongings of the Jawans under going operations. All of them are under employed. A burning example is the huge Dental Hospital building, but no one to make use of it, some of the Majors there, although totally underemployed, harass the Jawans. Care only to those who give them Seva Medals & exalted focat ka promotions

Rat bite treatment by Dr. Evelina Mujumdar on 22 Oct 2012

Rat bite may result local infection or rat bite fever (spirillosis/strpetobacillosis). It is rarely known to causes rabies. Treatment should be given acordingly(Penicillin/Erythromycin/Tetramycin)

Rat bite by RC Patro on 22 Oct 2012

It is shameful as well as disappointing to see the state of affairs at Army Base Hospital, which is considered to be prime medical centre for the benefit of armed personnel. Strict action be taken against people in charge of maintenance.

No doubt the politicos fly off abroad for treatment leaving the mango men in the lurch.

Base hospital woes by Aditya on 22 Oct 2012

Army base hospital Delhi is an absolute dump. The way those people treat retired veterans and wounded warriors is beyond pathetic. They treat them like dirt, and a burden upon their own esteemed selves. All these people should be fired. When some Babu from the MOD comes for treatment (they have been granted this facility now), they fall over each other to treat. When a soldier who has gallantly thrown away his future for his country comes, he is a burden. Shame on these so called doctors, and the process that runs such a place as a hospital.

Bite of Shame by Ramkumar on 22 Oct 2012

In general,Army Hospital means clean & well maintained wards. Its a shame to the Nation for the kind of treatment this officer as met.The chief of this Hospital is to be blamed & should be held responsible for this incident. He should spend more Time in the Hospital rather than in his office.

Strict action against the rats????

Mr. by Romi on 22 Oct 2012

It is bound to happen in our armed forces. Everyday it is becoming like our politicians and bureaucrats, ready to fight for their perks & priviliges and do not feel any responsibility to their duties.

Rats bite off officer’s toe at Army hospital by R. K. SHARMA on 22 Oct 2012

Such carelessness on administrative part of the hospital shows how easy minds these people are, and have no sense of responsibilities. It is a matter of great shame and stern actions should be taken against those reckless officials who brought disgrace to our brave army official.
