Riots in Maharashtra's Dhule district, 3 killed, 110 injured

Posted: Jan 07, 2013 at 0310 hrs IST

Mumbai In the second major communal conflagration in north Maharashtra in the past fortnight, three people were killed and more than 110 injured in Dhule after violence broke out in the crowded Machchi Bazaar area of the district. The injured included 49 policemen.

Police are yet to confirm the identity of the dead. The areas hit by violence have been put under curfew.

The incident is said to have been sparked off by a minor tiff over payment of a restaurant bill. Eyewitnesses claimed that a group of youths had a fight in the afternoon with the owner over the bill and the quality of food served.

“After some time the violence spread around the locality,” Inspector General of Police Deven Bharti said. After Machchi Bazaar, clashes were seen in Maulvi Ganj, Tasha Gali and Azad Nagar with members of two communities clashing with each other.

Policemen, who first used tear gas, were singled out for attack and had to open firing as the intensity of the violence increased. Among those injured was Deputy SP Monica Raut. While residents claimed the three deaths were caused in police firing, police said they were yet to confirm this.

“All the forces from the state have been sent to Dhule. Rapid Action Force has also been sent,” State DGP Sanjeev Dayal said.

Earlier, on December 25, three people had been killed in Raver in neighbouring Jalgaon district in violence between two communities.

Local activists claimed the violence was planned, with an eye on the elections in 2014. On Sunday, the rioters were armed with acid as well as petrol and kerosene bombs. “The entire incident is a failure on the part of the police machinery,” Dhule MLA Anil Gote said.

In 2008, Dhule had witnessed one of the worst riots seen in the state in the past few years. Ten people had been killed and nearly 100 injured in violence ahead of that year’s municipal elections.

Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Home Minister R R Patil appealed for calm.

not a single Hundu was killed by S. M. Ahmed on 29 Jan 2013

Not a single Hindu was killed in Dule but police killed 6 Muslims. Police men looted houses and shops instead of Local Hindus. Even they tried to protect the Muslim. It is sad to see that some people praise the killing of innocent people of this country.

RSS - IS THE MAIN CULPRIT - by shafiuddin on 08 Jan 2013

Hard Line Organizations such RSS/BJP/VHP/Bajrangdal and other sister organizations are in fact sowing the seeds of hate between the community, I am afraid because of that hatered separatism feeling may gave birth. In order to keep India unite we have to ban above hatered organization immediately.

Dhule violence - another case of Muslims going berserk and killing Hindus by Shilpa on 08 Jan 2013

It's not surprising to me that you left a certain Akbaruddin Owaisi out of your list of hate mongers - any thoughts on that? The patriotic Indian is slowly but surely beginning to see the truth behind people such as you and the Congress and their coterie - read about any riot in India and a so-called 'secular' party is most likely to have been in power either during the riot or immediately prior to the riot. You parroted the favorite lines of pseudo-secularists who want minority appeasement for votes. Keep ranting.

Real Face of "Largest" Democracy by Haroon on 08 Jan 2013

I just want to say its the real face of "Largest" Democracy in the world. The world should wake-up and see there is another India out of Bollywood like stunts.

Riots in Dhule ,Maharashtra's by ahme on 08 Jan 2013

These types of riots are showing Muslims their actual position in Largest Democracy of the world. Government is allowing rioters to burn and kill Muslims and when Muslims starts defending then Government is bring all the forces from the state including Rapid Action Force to crumb Muslims. After Riots Government is arresting Muslims by making combing operations and keeping in jail as terrorist. All these practices by government and racists Hindu organization will develop rebellion mindset in Muslims. It%u2019s against interest of India to oppress Muslims and think for peace and progress There will be no peace in India till we establish justice for all. If Muslims start fighting then India with 250 million Muslims will become another Iraq!!! I invite all Indian to think over it. Do we want a peaceful and progressive India or a trouble state?

islamic republic by shinde on 07 Jan 2013

Islamic Republic of India is quickly emerging. Its going to bite congress in its back for its decades of muslims appeasement politics. If this happened in Gujrat - Modi is respobsible - If it happens in Maharashtra, Sonia gandhi is not to be questioned. India is a doomed country and muslims will rule very soon. Hindus run for your lives.

change the sub to blah blah blah!! by Nitin on 07 Jan 2013

Yup, India is a doomed country... when we have idiots like you, Mohan Bhagvat, Abhijit Mukherji, Owaisi, Raj Thackreay et al how can india not be... Thank you for enlightening us to your stupidity and hate mongering.

Hate Mongers by Neeraj on 07 Jan 2013

This state encourages hatred. And once you build your society on hatred you will always find one or other group to hate. The biggest example is Pakistan. You hated Muslims, you hated Tamils you hated North Indians, and now you hate Biharis. You have become hate mongers. Moving forward you will see you will hate each other based on your origin of districts.

Lets put it in perspective by Nitin on 07 Jan 2013

Would like to make one minor modification to your stmt. This state's politicians encourage hatred and people blindly follow them.

RIOTS by N.ASTI on 07 Jan 2013

It is foolish that riots can take place for such useless matters and totally deplorable. However such shabby incidences can happen only in India.So-called secularism has failed in India as the practiced-one is totally PSEUDO.And the present day Media-Houses also bark on the same lines just for selfish purposes. All majority community people should thank IE and especially its Editor SG for not titling the item in a twisted way as 'Hindu atrocity' as they are highly interested to blame Majority Community of India possibly for their selfish interest.

appeasement by mandar on 07 Jan 2013

I had lived in this city for 20 years ,this muslim appeasement politics of local congress mla for last 2 generations has lead to this position. In last riots the culprit sabirshakh was giving interview in mumbai when police declared hi absconding.how can 49 policemen get injured in peety clash, the terrorist muslims have planned and attacked the police with preplanning just like last time. These antinational elements need to get encountered by police and RPF in dhule, malegaon ,aurangabad and beed then only riots will stop.

Biharis are involved by jai on 07 Jan 2013

Biharis are responsible for this incident.

Riot in Dhule by zubair ahmed on 07 Jan 2013

What's wrong with the entire scenario? Secularism? by Bharat VIJ on 07 Jan 2013

A minor tiff over a restaurant bill leading to communal riots where three are left dead and over a 100 injured. Now what's wrong with this scenario? They say the fracas was pre-planned with Elections 2014 in mind. I'd say without any bias, India's much touted Secularism is not working. That is what needs to be fixed or "riotously" be done away. As has been seen in Gujarat, a few may need to be sacrificed for long-holding peace for the many and for saving of many more lives in the longer run. The principle is based on ancient Hindu wisdom: For the interest of the Many, sacrifice the interest of the Few. No long term solution is "easy" and neither is this one. Modi-bashers of the audio-visual media can take a hike.

Stop making stupid comments by Nitin on 07 Jan 2013

Let us just make you the sacrificial lamb and make "Bharat" a better country.. What say?? the ancient Hindu wisdom: For the interest of the Many, sacrifice the interest of the Few implies sacrificing self interest for the benefit of society or country and not genocide as you are implying.

Stop being Stupid, Puerile, and Naive by Bharat VIJ on 07 Jan 2013

One thing I'll say for you: At least you did understand my comment. I consider members of all Indian communities as "us" and hence the '"sacrifice" of a few' comment, as correctly understood by you. My dear do you have any idea of the magnitude or extent a "genocide" would imply? The Gujarat riots were no genocide! You like to brandy about words without fully well understanding their import. Any way you are not alone, a lot many Indians suffer from this malaise.

Read sub of previous comment by Nitin on 07 Jan 2013

The way you are saying sacrifice, it is sounding like murder.. Dont you thing your Talk of sacrifice and Gujrat riots in the same context gives a whole new meaning to what you are saying. Gujrat riots were slaughter. Period. just because Gujrat is at peace now doesnt justify gujarat riots. PS : If you consider all indians as "us" then stop talking in terms of communities(Minority/Majority).

Your details please by DD on 07 Jan 2013

Let's test your theory. Im sure, for the interest's of "many" you won't mind sacrificing yourself. After all you are proposing the theory. Can you give me your contact details, here. I will "riotiously do away" with you and I hope you won't put up a resistance in order to prove your proposal. Also please write a letter and mail it to the police that you are ready to sacrifice yourself and become a guinea pig for the good of the country and that no legal action should be taken against anyone who "tests" your theory on you yourself. PS: I hope you dont mind paying me a small fee for travel expenses and purchase of necessary equipments and disposables necessary for the test.

You're Crazy Man! by Bharat VIJ on 07 Jan 2013

First of all, I am not even sure whether you have understood the full import of my comment. Assuming that you have understood my comment accurately, I am not sure how I should respond to you other than: You're crazy man! Get a Life! It's not me killing people and rioting for the sake of esoteric abstract concepts, on a consistent basis, and not limited to geographical boundaries. And you want my details? Before that, at least have the courage of providing your full name even though it may not be correct.

Saari Dunia Pagal hai by DD on 07 Jan 2013

Yes Yes Everyone is crazy, everyone except you. You are the only sane man left in the world. The whole world has gone mad.

Please be the first one !!! by Indian on 07 Jan 2013

How about you being sacrificed first ? Do you also agree with the sacrifice of Kashmiri Pandits ?

You haven't understood, at all!!! by Bharat VIJ on 07 Jan 2013

I was referring to the "sacrifice" of a few members of the minority community (of course some members of the majority community will have to make the sacrifice as well)as has happened in the so-called Gujarat riots where there is long lasting peace now. I am not in politics or even in India, if you want a leader willing to sacrifice himself to achieve noble ends, let me know. What's on your mind? What are you willing to do/sacrifice in turn?
