On the basis of Choudhary’s “confession”, the Madhya Pradesh police arrested Sudip Upadhayay, 35, his alleged accomplice in the crime, last week.
The incident dates back to July 27, 2006, when the victim, Mujeeb Lala, 35, was reportedly shot by Choudhary and Upadhayay, on the instructions of Ramji Kalsangra, a right wing terror suspect who is wanted in connection with the Samjhauta Express, Malegaon, Ajmer and Mecca Masjid blasts. Lala was a moneylender and also had a video rental-and-sale shop.
Speaking to The Indian Express from Ujjain, IG Upendra Jain said: “The case was lying unsolved for several years. After the disclosure, we have arrested Upadhayay and will soon seek Choudhary’s remand.”
According to the police, on the day of the incident, Lala was on his two-wheeler when the accused, who were riding a motorcycle, opened fire on him. Kalsangra is reported to have provided the arms and ammunition.
Upadhayay, who has a pesticide store near Indore, came in contact with RSS activist Sunil Joshi in 2000 and was a regular at RSS shakhas.
