In letter sent by the PM on December 13, it has instructed the Chief Minister and Chief Secretary to initiate proper probe against the V-C.

The PMO’s letter comes in the wake of an PIL filed in the Calcutta High Court seeking removal of Susanta Dutta Gupta for “deliberately committing several misconducts and violation of Visva-Bharati Act and spirit”. The Central Vigilance Commissioner and University Grants Commission have also been made party in the PIL.

The petitioner belonging to an alumni group has also accused the V-C of concealing vital information about his career. The petition, citing UGC notification of the June 28, 2010, states, “A Vice-Chancellor of a university must be a person of the highest level of competence, integrity, morals and institutional commitment.”

Since Dutta Gupta took over the the charge of the V-C, allegations of impropriety started pouring in.

He draws pension of Rs 25,000 from JNU as well as salary of Rs1,33,000 from V-B.

In 2002, he allegedly sexually harassed an associate professor of SN Bose Institute of Basic Sciences of Kolkata. The victim approached Women Commission, which is yet to complete its inquiry.
