In a bid to check the increasing rate of crime against the feminine gender in the national capital, government had set up the helpline "181" to offer immediate help to women in distress.
Dikshit had last week announced launch of the round-the-clock helpline for offering help to women in distress amid nationwide uproar over the December 16 brutal gangrape of the 23-year-old here. The girl had breathed her last on Saturday in a Singapore hospital.
Senior Delhi Government officials said the helpline could not be made functional due to some glitches in the MTNL network.
They said the helpline, which will operate from the Chief Minister's office in Delhi Secretariat, can be contacted from landlines as well as mobile phones. The helpline will be connected with all the 185 police stations across the city.
The Telecom Ministry had last week released the three-digit number following a request by Dikshit. It will be the first three-digit number to have been allotted by the Ministry in two years.
The Ministry had earlier allotted '167' for the helpline but upon request for a number that would be easier to remember, the number was changed to '181'.
The helpline finally became operational later in the afternoon.

the fact really is , the corrupt authorities/politicians could not control anything in the country. Due to this not only the life of women, the whole human life has no value in the immense populated but culturally great country.
This number very essential in all states, please Take futher step.
To satisfy my curiosity... I dialed 181 from my MTNL line at 3.40pm in Delhi & after hearing background music tone for 20 sec or so I heard a female voice. To end my embarrassment... I told the lady that I just dialed to checked whether the number is working or not!!! So please stop this rumor & don't jam 181 Unnecessarily.....PLEASE
Is this number'181' is unique and applicable in all the Indian states ?
Is this number is common among all Indian states ?
Modi is first in implenting this System but no mention of it! Purely a communal attitiute of Indian Express. I am of the opnion that you will not publish this my commment as I have observered on number of occasion that priase of Modi is not reported in Indian Express!!
That the helpline speaks volumes about what needs to be done to change a mindset that is centuries old! Do we have the will and the means to make the country safer for women or are we just back to making false pacifying promises which are simply empty gestures? To make a helpline work you need of dedicated and well trained staff! Does 181 come with someone who can answer calls?
Well said. Here in the UK there are Womens & Childrens helplines set up with massive care and preparation, and exact proceedures. Dedicated well trained staff with relevant experience, and access to the right help and support, emergency links to apporopriate agencies, and of course, constant follow-up and future protection, and all in complete confidence. I hope and pray that this helpline means that the Indian Government will actually stand up and do something genuinely great and honourable.
What about the helpline number for Noida and Gurgaon??? Will the same 181 work for NCR as well???
