Tahawwur Rana gets 14 yrs for Danish newspaper plot

Chicago A US court Thursday sentenced Tahawwur Rana, an accomplice of 26/11 Mumbai attacks conspirator David Headley, to 14 years in jail followed by five years of supervised release for the “serious crime” of providing material support to Laskhar-e-Toiba and for backing a plot to hit a Danish newspaper.

US prosecutors had sought 30 years for Pakistani-Canadian Rana, 52. Citing his poor health, his lawyers had sought a lighter term, saying he was duped into participation by his school friend Headley.

Rana was convicted in June 2011 by a federal grand jury, which found him guilty of helping LeT and planning an aborted plot to bomb the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten.

Rana, arrested in 2009 for his involvement in 26/11, was acquitted of that charge. However, Indian investigators want to question him for a second time.

“We have on one hand a very intelligent person capable and willing to provide assistance to many people... What is difficult to understand is how that person is sucked into a ghastly plot that proposed to go into the private office of a newspaper,” US District Judge Harry D Leinenweber said Thursday.

“Providing a long sentence would make sure that Rana does not get involved in any kind of terrorist activity in the future,” he added.

Rana off the 26/11 hook by Ashwin Panemangalore on 18 Jan 2013

Its ridiculous to see that Rana goes scot free for his 26/11 abettment He should have got the 30 years One hopes this goes to a higher court and true justice is administered

Rana's sentence by Kolsat on 18 Jan 2013

How could the US Judge accept the argument that Rana was duped by Headley and that he is unwell therefore give Rana a lighter sentence? Rana knew full well what he was doing and faced with a stiff sentence every criminal says that he/she is unwell and should therefore get a lighter sentence or set free. The Judge fell for this tactic. Rana will come out of jail not a reformed man but a determined man ready cause further trouble for US and anoother nation as dictated by his LeT masters.
