"Well done Punter on an incredible career. It would be great to see you finish with a ton. It was an honour to play alongside of you," added Glenn McGrath.
Pacer Brett Lee, who played under Ponting, hoped that the 37-year-old goes out after scoring a hundred.
"Congrats Punter on a fantastic career, enjoyed playing along side you! Go out with a bang mate!" he tweeted.
"Punter, congratulations on a fantastic career. Your departure will be a massive hole in the Australian Cricket team #RickyPonting #Legend," said Matthew Hayden.
Not just Australians, Ponting also drew praise from his rivals.
"Ricky ponting what an absolute legend. Iam glad I had the honour of playing against him. Take a bow #legend #respect," tweeted India's Virat Kohli
"The best batsman I had the privilege to play against … Ricky Ponting... #Punter Australia cricket will not be the same without him..." added former England captain Michael Vaughan.
"You have to take your hat off to Ricky Ponting calling time on a magnificent career. Hell of a player," felt England spinner Graeme Swann.
The former Australian captain, who will turn 38 next month, has scored 13,366 Test runs from 167 matches at an average of 52.21, second only to India's Sachin Tendulkar (15562 from 192 matches). He made his Test debut in 1995 against Sri Lanka at the same venue where he will walk into Test sunset.
"Congratulations Ricky Ponting for an incredible career. The most successful skipper n brilliant batsman. Wish legends could stay forever," tweeted Indian batsman Suresh Raina. In the 375 ODIs he has played, Ponting accumulated 13,704 runs, scoring 30 centuries, with a highest score of 164 and an average of 42.03. He has, however, not played in the ODIs since being dropped from the team in February this year.
Nicknamed 'Punter' by Shane Warne for his penchant for a bet (punt) on the greyhounds, Ponting has scored 41 centuries, third in the all-time list behind Tendulkar (51) and South African Jacques Kallis (44).
"Huge respect for how Ponting played the game. Tough competitor Aussies will miss him. 100 at Perth to finish?" tweeted English pacer Stuart Broad.
The South African Cricketers' Association also lauded Ponting.
"Congratulations to Ricky Ponting on an outstanding career. You will be missed but never forgotten," SACA said on its twitter page.
How about our poor Sachin. It is high time he too decide to hand up his gloves. He has some respect still, that too will wane quickly. BCCI and players have politicised cricket and made it money making business.
'Ricky Ponting' - the name is enough to raise respect, toughness and skill and a zeal for success who has made a great career in world cricket. We Indians are really felt sorry not to see once again in playing against India. Ponting won greast support in India and hats off to him to finish on such a milestones that every cricketer will want to adorn such accomplishments. Long live Ponting and world cricket would be orphaned after loosing such a valuable player. wish all the success & peace in your rest of life.
