Triple ton controversy: Opponent team

Kolkata, January 18 A day after one Masrum Sarkar was reported as having smashed a triple century in a CAB 110-point league match in Kanchrapara, it was like a Pandora’s box being prised open.

It has been learnt that the young gun who scored the pacy 301-run marathon knock off 126 balls, turning up for Kanchrapara Cricket Coaching Centre (CCC), isn’t actually Masrum Sarkar himself, but one Soumen Ghosh, who reportedly turned up for Masrum at the match against Shilpashree Dum Dum Cricket Coaching Centre (CCC) in the fateful junior circuit league match.

In fact, the opponents Shilpashree Dum Dum CCC have lodged a formal complaint with the umpires at the two-day match that ended today. For the record, Soumen, turning up for Masrum, had scored 301 in Kanchrapara CCC’s 634 all out yesterday. On the second day today, Shilpashree CCC folded up for just 121 runs, and Kanchrapara CCC ended up registering a massive 513-run victory.

Meanwhile, the CAB officials were left red-faced after the controversial case of alleged impersonation came to light this morning. Umpires at the match, Gautam Roy and Dhiman Biswas, have already forwarded the opponent team’s written complaint to the CAB officials.

Both Masrum and Soumen didn’t turn up for the action at the start of the day’s play, and the two umpires immediately swung into action. The photo identity card of Masrum — Soumen’s face naturally didn’t match the photo on Masrum’s card —and was attached with the formal complaint letter submitted by the Shilpashree Dum Dum CCC team officials.

And at a time when the daggers are already out against the Prasun Mukherjee-led CAB administration following Bengal cricket’s fall from grace in the Ranji Trophy this season, this fresh controversy is fast snowballing into a larger plank for blamegame in the CAB’s corridors.

The CAB administration has already decided to start a suo motu investigation into the alleged case of impersonation, even as the administration is being castigated by the media for oversight at the junior and sub-junior level.

Meanwhile, the East Zone team for the upcoming Duleep Trophy was picked today at the CAB, with Orissa stalwart Shib Sunder Das named skipper and Bharathi Arun picked coach for the zonal tournament. Bengal young gun Manoj Tiwary has been picked vice-captain.
