Uma Bharati reiterates threat to torch Walmart store

Bhopal Former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Uma Bharti has renewed her threat to set on fire the first Walmart store that opens in the country.

"I will torch the first store and go to jail (for arson),'' she said in Indore today, as she attacked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for "selling out" in order to improve his image in the "international market".

While the BJP had issued a similar warning earlier, she reiterated her threat today in the wake of the Centre's decision to allow FDI in retail.

She said the Prime Minister should have resigned instead of taking decision aimed at pleasing foreign companies.

In 2007, Bharti, who was then heading the Bharatiya Janshakti Party, had forced a Reliance Fresh store in Indore to shut down, claiming that she would have set it on fire if it had been a Walmart outlet.

She must be out of her mind by Sri on 20 Sep 2012

She must be really out of her mind to say these things. The way walmart works, it actually benefits local farmers and local manufacturers more than now as they buy directly from them. Today the farmer does not get 25% of what the customer pays. The middleman eats more than 75% of the income. Also there is no other way India can get out of this mess we are in today. Torching walmart store does not really hurt walmart, they would be covered by Insurance. Hope she puts her brain before her emotion or her political gains.
