Kolkata, January 10 Friends of Victoria Memorial, an association formed by people who go for morning walks there, filed a petition in the Calcutta High Court on Thursday asking it to allow them to park their vehicles on the roads close to the monument.

Following a High Court order, Kolkata police had banned the parking of vehicles within 3-km of the Memorial.

As a result, the aged, women and the ailing who come for a walk in the area, face difficulty in crossing the roads where the movement of vehicles is very fast then.

Also public transport is not available at that time, forcing the people to take their own vehicles.

The petitioner also suggested that an expert be appointed to study the impact that the parking of cars for two or three hours would have on the environment.

In any case, hardly 100 to 150 cars would be parked there in morning hours.

The matter is likely to come up in the next hearing to be held somewhere next week.
