Kolkata, September 26 Priyanka Todi is expected to surface any moment following summons by the Criminal Investigation Department in connection with the inquiry into the death of her husband, Rizwanur Rehman.

According to reports, Priyanka was to come from Tirupati, where she had gone with her parents. The police neither confirmed nor denied such reports.

The CID had served notice at her father, businessman Ashok Todi’s Burrabazar office as well, asking him present himself within 24 hours. Todi’s Salt Lake residence had been under lock and key since Priyanka had returned from Rehman’s place on September 8. Rehman, a computer graphic designer, had died an unnatural death on September 21.

At the CID headquarters in Bhabani Bhavan, police said Priyanka’s statement is critical. The CID today examined two students of a multi-media firm where Rehman used to work as a graphic designer. The investigators have also visited the spot where his body was alleged to have been located on the tracks.

The CID questioned Rehman’s three uncles and elder brother till Tuesday evening. His relatives are now planning to seek legal support.

The top brass is under tremendous pressure, as the family’s allegations of police pressure have been heard, both by Opposition and the ruling party.

PR Roy, state home secretary said: “No one is above investigation. The CID is making a thorough inquiry and till date no one has been given a clean chit.”

At the CPM party headquarters, state secretary Biman Bose said, “If any police officer is found guilty, he will be punished.”

The Association for Protection of Democratic Rights, a human rights body, has taken up the case and demanded an independent inquiry and police protection for Rehman’s family. Eminent writer Mahasweta Devi has held chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and the state police responsible for the fiasco.

Meanwhile, Sadique Hossain, one of the witnesses of the marriage, is on the run.

While Rehman’s family is not aware of Hossain’s whereabouts, sources claimed that he was in “safe custody”.

Ever since Priyanka had gone to live with her parents, Rehman too,

had been on the run, fearing more trouble from police.

“He feared that Lal Bazar will take action against him. We don’t know where he stayed. He used to drop in occasionally,” a relative said.

The Association for Protection of Democratic Rights (APDR), with which Rehman had filed a complaint concerning harassment, has demanded protection for the family.
