'Washington Post article does grave injustice to legacy of Manmohan Singh'

Agencies

Posted: Sep 06, 2012 at 1034 hrs IST
The Washington Post has described Manmohan Singh as a silent PM.

Washington Asserting that under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, India has made tremendous progress, the Indian National Overseas Congress (INOC) USA has said that The Washington Post article on the architect of economic reforms has done grave injustice to the legacy of a great man.

"This article truly does grave injustice to the legacy of a great man who will always be respected for his great vision in changing the Indian economy in a fundamental way," George Abraham, president, INOC USA wrote in a letter to The Washington Post.

Abraham said that the Washington Post article "denigrating" the lifetime achievements of a "great leader" clearly "lacks any objectivity" and it is "coloured with certain bias and skewed" perspectives.

"Dr. Manmohan Singh was the chief architect of India's new economy. He has taken a centrally planned, inward looking, public sector centred economy and reversed its direction. What he has accomplished is just phenomenal.

"Actually this dramatic change paints a picture of a man who is some sort of a revolutionary. If India has entered the 21st century, the current Prime Minister has a lot to do with it," he wrote to The Washington Post.

Corruption, he said, is not limited to any particular political party. "It is endemic and cut across all spheres and every cadre," he said, adding that Congress has shown great courage in dealing with corruption even at the highest places.

"As far as the economic slowdown is concerned, India is till growing at a rate that may be the envy of the western world today.

"BJP and regional parties need to shoulder a great amount of blame how and when they shot down the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) initiative by Dr. Manmohan Singh that sent a very negative signal to the global investment community by almost saying India is not yet ready as a big time global player," Abraham wrote.

The Washington Post report said that, "the shy, soft-spoken 79-year-old is in danger of going down in history as a failure".

"But the image of the scrupulously honorable, humble and intellectual technocrat has slowly given way to a completely different one: a dithering, ineffectual bureaucrat presiding over a deeply corrupt government," the report said.

MMS IS IMPOTENT by freddie on 08 Sep 2012

Whenever and wherever their is a issue in India MMS hides behind two woman? Guess when he comes to office he hides behind Sonia the Italian mafia and when he goes home he hides behind his wife.

Congress party perpetuating a lie about MMS by pvas on 07 Sep 2012

George Abraham needs to stop trying to perpetuate the myth that Manmohan singh started the economic reforms. MMS was NOT the one that initiated economic reforms, but P. V. Narasimha Rao, the then PM of India, that set about reforming the country's economic system. George Abraham and other Congress political party members seem bent on reinventing history to suit their own political agendas. There is a saying "A lie repeated often becomes the truth" - George Abraham seems to be trying to do just that, in the hope that this lie pertaining to MMS will become the truth. Well, Mr. Abraham, the American media are not that dumb or stupid or ignorant to not know the truth about MMS or understand his true calibre.

Indian media shd learn a lot by Ramesh on 06 Sep 2012

WASHINGTON POST has done a very good job of projecting facts. Infact they shd have been more harsh. MMS is not onlt dummy PM remote controlled by Sonia, he is clearly a liar too. Indian media is taking funds from Congress and hiding all the facts and criticism. The only journalism India has now is to cover up the scams and promote ruling party..

Injustice to PM by Shanti S Chawla on 06 Sep 2012

The PM has done great injustice to his own legacy by reducing himself just a taker of orders from High Command rather than do his own thinking and acting.

Failed Legacy of MS by Chandrasekhar on 06 Sep 2012

George Abraham must be living in fool's paradise. Manmohan Singh was a bureaucrat of failed legacy whom Narasimha Rao appointed as Finance Minister. It was Naarasimharao who envisioned the economic freedom for India and under his able stewardship the loyal bureaucrat that MS was ably performed. He is not a Primeministerial material anyway. So he is helplessly presiding over a corrupt government and biding time for his master's heir apparent to take over the charge. India has gone down the tube under Congress misrule for the past 60 years. As it looks now, India is getting more and more vulnerable and weaker for our enemies' delight. Who worries?

Yes Grave Injustice Indeed by John Abraham on 06 Sep 2012

I agree with George Abraham that the article by Washington Post is grave injustice to MMS. Instead they should have been very open and called him humangous failure, should have gone into facts and called him worthless leader, most corrupt person, shoudl have called him puppet and part of Sycopancy. Instead it let him go free lightly. I wish the paper felt very strongly like most Indians feels for MMS under who the highest inflation happened. India owes more money and has the highest trade deficit under him. George Abraham probably got paid from Congress and will say anything for his Christian mother Sonia. Grave injustice indeed for someone who is the biggest blunder blot of Century for India.

MMS as PM by A well wisher of India on 06 Sep 2012

It is unfortunately hard to differ from the observations made by the Washington Post on the performance of Dr. Man Mohan Singh as Indian PM. He will certainly go down in history as one of the most unsuccessful Indian PM. He has behaved only like a faithful bureaucrat rather than like a good leader and manager of political leaders. He has brought disrespect to the instution of PM by failing to act as a bold leader and stopping a number of "Corruption Gates", i.e., 2G, Commonwealth, Coal-gate, to name a few important ones only.

Congress party,BJP Equally Corrupt by Ramesh on 06 Sep 2012

Whole country is corrupt. We do not shoe away corrupt people with contemt. We show sychofancy and artificial respect as it seen in Congress cadres.Prime Minister and UPA chief is equally responsible for bringing disgrace to India. They did not take serious action against Suresh kalmadi,Raja, kani and many corrupt persons. No one takes Congress,BJP,Sonia or Prime Minister as leaders.A leader should have towering personality and admonish wrong doers instead of justifying their actions

What legacy ? by BKumar on 06 Sep 2012

Why is it difficult for people to understand that if you are head of a corrupt government for over 8 years and you have even defended in parliament all the corrupt colleagues who have been tried and proved corrupt by courts, you can no longer claim that you are honest man with impeccable integrity. MS may not have personally benefited from his Govt's corrupt deeds but he is as corrupt as Raja or Coalgate scamsters for letting them getting away with this loot under his nose. What legacy are we talking about ? His Govt scams are figuring in the all time top ten scams in the world. Whoever wants is welcome to celebrate this legacy.

Article on our PM by Veliyam Sasi on 06 Sep 2012

Majority of Indians also feel the same way as Washington Post correspondent. The PMO and Minister of Information and Broadcasting should learn to respect different views. Instead of asking for apology efforts should be made to improve the performance of the PM and his government to be commented upon to ones liking.

Unadulterated rubbish by Vinod on 06 Sep 2012

I can understand presenting alternative view points. But if someone is blatantly lying, it is not an opposing view. It is misinformation, i.e. a lie. Manmohan's performance (if it can be called that) has been always been suspect. He was Chairman of the Planning Commission while India's resources were destroyed and the country became bankrupt (1985-89) - the Rajiv Gandhi legacy. The recovery started under Narasimha Rao (1991-96) but only took off under Vajpayee. Then as PM, Manmohan drove India into rapid decline. Today, India is not much better than Greece. These are facts - verifiable by reference to the country's resources during each of these periods. Yet you print misinformation and fantasy?

Killing the Messenger by Sanjay Roy on 06 Sep 2012

Killing the messenger has became the national past time of this government and the overall political system. It will do huge damage to the reputation of India. Congress is taking this nation to a situation, where the it is only remained to push the last nail in the coffin, complete anarchy!! the vested interest include the oligarch, the Mafia, the politician will benefit from such a situation. Truth is always the causality for our political system has mercilessly destroyed truth from the national discourse...They are living in an ivory tower and thinks that citizen of the nations are bunch of fools...MMS is the biggest culprit of the nation and must be punished for the gigantic misdeeds...

Legacy of the P.M by alok sen on 06 Sep 2012

God Forbid the Legacy of Mr.M.M.Singh will be the haste with which he has pushed Nuclear Plants all over the country on the misguided belief that he has to be in the Good Books of the American Establishment.GOD ONLY knows how SAFE are the installations and WHAT LIABILITY clauses (PRACTICALLY APPLICABLE ON THE SUPPLIERS OF EQUIPMENTS)cover the plants in the event of a disaster. We,as a country, has proved time and again that we cannot ACTUATE any Rescue Mechanisms when required with Sub Standard equipments not at all maintained regularly and drills carried out as a routine.ONE will be SHOCKED to the bones IF A SURVEY IS MADE on the conditions of Fire Extinguishers and Fire Control systems installed in ALL PLACES- Govt.Offices,Hospitals,Schools,Hotels etc.A very advanced and with the tragic effects of a nuclear attack to make them alert of any nuclear accidents Japan found it impossible to protect their plant when tidal waves struck them. How do we expect our own PREPAREDNESS save the day

A chotic country with a sound Prime Minister by John on 06 Sep 2012

A country were everyday is a chaotic envirnment its only dictatorship they like and always a boss bossing over and runs his own agenda, where as we see Prime Minister Manmohan singh expects certain rightfull way of working taking an oath under the constiution and due obligation of the the judical bodies. there is no lack of respect to the greatest of minds in the chaotic creators and unrespectfull ministers who expect prime minister to come to the street to fight. We respect your maturity at all times, India is heading toward dictatorship not for sound policeis and managment if so let it go, most of the people and world understands only after disaster.

MMS Legacy. by RN on 06 Sep 2012

Nobody disputes the ability of MMS as FM during the PVN Rao Government. But as a PM, he is an utter failure. When he was ready to risk his Govt for Nuclear Deal, why did he allow Raja, Kalmadi and Coal corruptions to take place. He should have been bold then and there. INOC wrote the letter politically and surprised IE makes it as a big news! MMS is good as an Executive - probably a President or a FM, and Congress could have put a bold and efficient person at the PM's chair. For MMS the PM's definition is not more than "Pupper Manmohan". That's the tragedy of India. Congress will dumb him as well (as they did for PVNR), after 2014 elections when the Dynasty is do not need him anymore. This is a bitter truth. They projected him and succeeded in 2009 and people now realized their mistake. JAI HO!

MMS by lala on 06 Sep 2012

Gandhi-Nehru parivar is accountable for major part of MMS failure.

Washington Post article Manmohan Singh by S.Ramuls on 06 Sep 2012

Washington has fairly commented on his absolute non-performance as a Prime minister not as an economist. Indians had great expectations from him as PM. The very fact that he has been presiding over a deeply corrupt government is clear for all to see and he did nothing about it. While he may be personally honest but what good is it when the country is being looted and he acts like King Nero of Rome whether it is 2G scam or coal-gate or commonwealth games.
