Even as her husband and sons left with her daughter’s body, some relatives had to rush her to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital. Doctors admitted her in the Intensive Critical Care Unit at around 6 am, where she remained, undergoing all kinds of investigations through the day, till she was discharged in the evening. She was diagnosed as suffering from “extreme psychological trauma”.
Speaking to The Indian Express after performing the last rites, the victim’s father said: “My wife had hardly eaten in the last two weeks. She was exhausted... I think she was not ready to face the shock of our daughter’s death, despite doctors always telling us that she was serious. She cried intermittently all of Saturday, but it got worse on the flight back home.”
Dr S P Barua, additional medical superintendent of DDU hospital, said: “She came to us in the morning in a very weak state, with a history of frequent blackouts over a short span of time. So we performed all tests to assess neurological and cardiac function, and regular blood works, and kept her under observation in the ICCU.”
Earlier, senior doctors who had been treating the victim said her mother appeared to be “in denial”. “She was fiercely protective of her, perhaps even more than the father. Even when the victim’s statement was being taken, and authorities wanted it to be videographed, her mother refused, although we explained that it would help her daughter’s case,” said a doctor.
Other doctors said that even while discussing the victim’s transfer to Singapore, when the family was being given an “accurate picture” of the seriousness of her condition, the mother’s only question was “when” her daughter would recover.
“We are all in shock. Nobody can accept this news. My wife took it the hardest. It is too painful. I have not gone inside her room. She was born in this house. Her books, clothes they are all here. It is hard to believe I will never hear her voice again, she will never read books to me in English again,” said the victim’s father. As he attended to some phone calls through the day, his sons urged him to catch up on some sleep.
In the chaos, the family has not even managed to choose a picture of the victim to garland. A garland brought by somebody lies discarded in a corner. “It is too painful to look through her pictures,” said the father.
The family, meanwhile, faced another problem as the entire neighbourhood came to know the identity of the gangrape victim.
“Till now, we had managed to keep the news relatively secret, and the few media channels which came here were turned away by some neighbours close to us. But when we arrived with my sister’s body early morning on Sunday, there was such extensive security deployment...” said the victim’s brother, adding that the streets outside were now blocked with curious neighbours. “We cannot even step out of the house. At this point, who wants to face the questions?” he said.
Security personnel continued to be deployed during the day as several VIPs, including Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, visited the family. “I am tired... I have not stepped out of my room. Some VIPs came, but my father attended to them,” said the victim’s brother.
Many neighbours turned up to pay their last respects too. “I live in the next street, and even I did not know the girl was from here. When I heard about it at around midnight, I was shocked,” said a local resident.
“She was a paramedical student, but we all knew her as the local doctor. She was among the toppers of her school,” said a close friend of the victim’s brother.
The victim’s family is slated to go to their native village in Ballia district on Monday, for at least ten days. “It is painful being in this house, there are too many memories, and we all want to get away now. We have to go to the village to complete other rituals,” said her brother.
But they were yet to get confirmed train tickets on Sunday evening. “There were so many police officials and VIPs here. Now we will try and see if someone can help us get confirmed tickets for Monday,” he added.
And when they return to Delhi, they will just have one goal. “The fight has just begun. We want all the accused hanged, and we will fight for that, till the end,” said the brother.

To the parents of the holly woman: You and your loved one will be in my thoughts and prayers. I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved one. I wish these brutal gangs will be sliced into pieces so that they suffered to hell. I wish them to go to hell. God bless you.
My condolences go to the young lady and her family, who died a pre-matured death, so caused by 6 devils. Sexual crimes in India, major & minor, especially in New Delhi, have gone unnoticed due to social stigma or without punishment even in case of FIR due to corrupt administration. No wonder why Islam has such a harsh punishment for the fornicators. If India has to overcome this shameful act of crimes, it has to follow the path of Shari%u2019a or at least close to that. Forget about long jail time, even easy punishment of death can%u2019t solve this heinous social crime.
Deepest sympathy to this young lady's family.I am British and was on holiday in India recently and treated with great respect by everyone I met.Am so sad this country's reputation is now tarnished by these evil demons.
This tragic event is being reported worldwide. It is an international embarassment for India, that women are treated in this way. I visited India in 2009 with a friend who is a white English lady. I recall her being appalled at how women were treated as she experienced "eve teasing" on a number of occasions. On the Delhi Metro, a man stood between her legs as she was sat on a "woman" only seat; and kept pushing his leg against hers, until I pushed him out of the way. On another occasion, walking up the stairs at Delhi train station, a man was walking down the other way and extended his hand to grap my friend's bosom. This is absolutely disgusting and Indians need to sit down and think why is it that men feel it is acceptable to treat women in such a way? I think these men need reminding that they too have mothers and sisters and wouldn't appreciate it if someone was ill-behaved against their loved ones. This is an international embarassment for India, and Indians need to act!
I feel so consumed with this sad painful story of pure evil. How can anyone think its ok to treat anyone like this whether under the influence of alcohol or not? Many times on my visits to India I had been subjected to sexual harassment but was so shocked that its so accepted by all including my own mother!! These attitudes have to change to give our children, mothers and sisters a safer future. In the west a crime is reported and dealt with no matter how big or small,no matter how rich or poor a person is why can't india have the same attitude towards crime instead of being infested with bribe accepting scum?! Hanging these evil people is far to quick and easy, they should all be tortured to death and the family should have full input in how this evil is punished. Rest in peace my darling, may you be remembered forever.
My Condolence%u2019s to the victims family.May her soul rest in peace.Accused must be given 100 times of whipping and hanged.
The death penalty is too leniant. Those 6 men should be brutally tortured, have the samethings done to them. As a South African Indian, along with other indians here in South Africa I am furious about this incident. What is taking so long for "Justice" to be done? Wake Up India! This cannot go on, Sexual Violence against women must stop !!!!! A lesson needs to be taught to any man who thinks that he can do this again!!! I want justice to be done, i am eagerly awaiting to here "when it will be done"!
Prayers and thoughts to the family.
You are not alone brother, the world is mourning through the loss, Its an socking news for all of us. .
The punishment is not only for the rapists but also for the rulers of Delhi and India
I almost feel that the death penalty is too light a punishment for these monsters. I can only pray that the family is able to get some peace now. Amidst my deep sadness at reading this article, my heart swells with joy at the response of the Indian public at this shocking crime. They have not given up and I know they wont until justice is served and thats what makes Indians stand out from the rest of the world, their strength and resilience of spirit.
You are not alone in this battle brother. She is our sister too. Tears run down while reading this article. Nothing less than a death penalty for the accused.
expunge all derogatory references written by Poet Tulsidas like " Dhore, ganwar, shudra, pasha, NAARI, yeh sub Tadan Ke adhikari". Ram's story of sending Sita jee to ban vaas when she was pregnent on Washerman' remarks,, muslim's must not be allowed to give Talaak to any raped woman by uttering Talaak 3 times.
YOU ARE NOT ALONE BROTHER,THE WORLD IS IN MOURNING THROUGH THE LOSS.
IT IS VERY PAINFUL TO READ THE NEWS THE FAMILY IS DRIVEN TO PANIC SITUATION. JUSTICE TO THE FAMILY NEEDED IN TERMS OF MAXIMUM PUNISHMENT TO THE CULPRITS AND IN TERMS OF CASH COMPENSATION TO A LARGEST EXTENT TO THE FAMILY TO PROGRESS FURTHER AFTER HER DEATH. THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD INITIATE ALL POSSIBLE HELP AND COMPENSATION
Everybody wants the rapists hanged. It is the only just end for them.
first and foremost the death penalrolety for these 6 rapists, nothing less. next we must wipe out rapists from India and the World through: 1. THE DEATH PENALTY FOR RAPISTS;or 2. life in prison without parole and physical castration 3. Prison terms [minimum 40 years] without parole and physical ho refuse No compromise on these 3 LAWS. Any politician who refuse to support this BILL to become LAW must be voted out as a Representative of the people. Further a rapist must be charged immediately and verdict rendered within 90 days. The verdict must be on one of the 3 categories, nothing less. Most people, including my self, favor the death penalty for rapists.
May god give some sensitivity to the politicians and police officials so that they perform their duty and such painful incidents doesn't happen in future. There is no end to the greed, there is more satisfaction in making others happy rather than fulfilling your own greeds.
The Parents know the pain that they have in there minds , hearts when one's child meets with an horror incident of Barbaric Act and at last breathes last . The need of time is to implement Strict Punishment for those all who indulge in Anti Social Concepts and try to create horror .
