In January 2011, city-based theatre artiste Abhijeet Choudhary was contemplating writing a story for a film inspired by the life of Mahatma Gandhi. During a discussion, Dhanashree Heblikar, his co-artiste, struck upon an idea: What if Nathuram Godse, who had murdered Gandhiji, is reborn? Soon, the idea took shape in the form of a 10-minute short film, Godse to Gandhi.

The film, which had 25 shows in a single day at Mahavir Jain Vidyalaya on October 2, has been selected to be placed in the library of Maharashtra Gandhi Smarak Nidhi (MGSN), which houses over 25 other films on Gandhi. Besides films, MGSN also has around 5,000 books on Gandhi in English, Marathi and Hindi.

Before developing into a full-fledged story, Choudhary and Heblikar read various books on Gandhi, met people who follow Gandhian principles and also those who had the privilege to know Gandhi in person.

“Some of the people whom we met include 86-year-old Vidya Vele, who was a part of various movements led by Gandhi and Yuwaraj Shah, chairperson of Shri Mahavir Jain Vidyalaya whose father and grandfather were freedom fighters,” says Heblikar, who has given vocals for Godse to Gandhi.

The film’s story is set in the year 2012 and revolves around a college-going boy who develops an unusual connection with the word “Gandhi”. He remembers his past life and realises that he was Nathuram Godse in his last birth. “He repents his act and decides to live his life on the principles of Mahatma Gandhi,” says Heblikar. The film, directed by Choudhary and produced by Swatantra Films, has been shot at Shri Mahavir Jain Vidyalaya.

The cinematography of Godse to Gandhi has been done by Arun Gopalan, who worked with C K Muraleedharan as assistant cinematographer for Hindi commercial venture Agent Vinod. While the editing has been done by Mahesh Phundkar of Bars and Tones, Devesh Chobe has assisted in direction.

The film has Shrinivas Shastri, Bikrom Borkakoty, Anirudha Jadhav Zuber Sayyed and Karan Parab in different roles. “We are planning to send the film for Cannes Film Festival in 2013. Later, we might turn it into a full-length feature film,” says Heblikar.

“Gandhiji has been a phenomenal figure across the world. Through this film, we want to portray that his ideologies are so strong that even Godse accepts them and starts following. Even in today’s age, for problems like terrorism and communal riots, Gandhian principles such as truth and non-violence are an answer,” says Shah.

Anwar Rajan, a trustee of MGSN, says they are currently celebrating Gandhi Week and Godse to Gandhi will be showcased as part of the programme. “We also have a five-and-a-half-hour-long documentary on Gandhiji with original shots and clippings,” says Rajan.

A lession to learn ! by Dr M.M..HAZARIKA PhD on 08 Oct 2012

We all make mistakes being it is a part of one's life but repenting it, is a 'pleasure absorbed' while undoing the said action. The Great of Greatest Saint Valmiki as well as Prophet Mohammad did it to become enlightened; even though born ignorant but yet we are following the reverse of their teachings.Such is the beauty of following TRUTH.I am too is a most ignorant human being never ever consulted Books to acquire knowledge to obtain my Degree in Engineering but followed the ones which were or are in-built in my character. When I presented the Theory to SPE,USA for Publication, the Technical committee commented that while the Theory is correct, there was no references from where the tread was picked up and the names of co-author absent being none can present a manuscript of such an immense value without help from others nonetheless it was done alone only and hence presented to Ministry of Technology and innovation before doing any further correspondence with SPE but saw a rejection.
