Woman is bound by contract to husband to look after him: Mohan Bhagwat

Indore RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, who stoked a controversy a few days ago saying that rapes do not take place in rural but urban India, has created a fresh row now with remarks that a woman is bound by contract to husband to look after him.

"A husband and wife are involved in a contract under which the husband has said that you should take care of my house and I will take care of all your needs. I will keep you safe.

"So, the husband follows the contract terms. Till the time, the wife follows the contract, the husband stays with her, if the wife violates the contract, he can disown her," Bhagwat told a rally here yesterday.

Reacting sharply to Bhagwat's comment, CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat said, "I don' think it is really surprising because at the end of the day, this is what RSS is. That is why I think it is the retrogade 'samiti' of India. These were the regents who when BJP was in power wanted a new Constitution of India based on 'manushriti'. So when he talks in this language, he only reflects his ideology."

The RSS chief had created a flutter last week when he had said in Silchar in Assam that rape is mainly prevalent in urban India due to western influence and that such crimes against women do not happen in rural areas of the country.

The remark that came against the backdrop of the Delhi gangrape incident was slammed by Congress, CPI-M and women's bodies while BJP and RSS defended it saying the comment should be taken in proper perspective.

Bhagwat had claimed that the incidents of rape were the result of adoption of western culture in society as a whole and that erosion of traditional Indian values were more pronounced in urban areas.

"Crimes against women happening in urban India are shameful. It is a dangerous trend. But such crimes won't happen in Bharat or the rural areas of the country. You go to villages and forests of the country and there will be no such incidents of gangrape or sex crimes," he had said.

"Where 'Bharat' becomes 'India' with the influence of western culture, these type of incidents happen. The actual Indian values and culture should be established at every stratum of society where women are treated as 'mother'," Bhagwat had said, demanding that the government take appropriate action to stop rape incidents and RSS will support any government initiative to change existing laws.

On the RSS chief's husband-wife contract remark, Karat said, "I don't know if he knows this but in India on the basis of caste system, we have the worst kind of oppression of Dalit and adivasi women.

"When these people talk about 'Hindu Rashtra' and Hindutva, it is based on this highly casteist, partriarchal framework and that is why I think what RSS spokesmen are saying reflect their inner thoughts," she said, adding, "Because they believe women are subordinate to men and women are appendages to men."

RSS spokesman Ram Madhav said the projection of Bhagwat's views on the marriage system in the Indian context is "totally false".

"It is totally falsifying his views. He said the western marriage system is contractual where a man and a woman consider marriage as a contract whereas he also went on to say that Indian marriage system is a very sacred institution.

"In this, the woman has a place of great respect and the man has certain obligations towards the family and the way the whole thing was projected was as though Bhagwat was calling Indian marriage contractual. This is total distortion of what he has said," according to Madhav.

On Bhagwat's comment on the rape issue, Karat had then said, "Bhagwat neither understands India nor Bharat." She had said said government statistics of atrocities on women and sexual assault showed that the maximum number of victims belong to the poor, dalit and tribal communities.

National Commission of Women(NCW) Chief Mamta Sharma had said Bhagwat should stop differentiating in terms of geography.

"We are all Indians. We are all citizens of India...Go to grassroots level and see what is the condition of the women there," she had said.

However, Madhav had said the RSS chief's statement should be taken in proper perspective.

"He has condemned the heinous crime of assaulting women, rape against women and he said it is an utterly wrong thing and that people who indulge in such things must be punished," he added.

Woman is bound by contract to husband to look after him: Mohan Bhagwat by ahirwan on 07 Jan 2013

Misogynistic view of matrimony. Contract of Love is missing here. The basis of man/woman connection a mere contract? This world would become an intolerable place. The onus of a happy marraige is solely a burden on the woman. The man decides when to leave and on any pretext. Children and family dont, come into the picture. Such people divide India and drag India into dark ages not a future for our Children and grand children amongst the World at large

Last Night I had seen the full version of his speech on a India TV.

There is a point by Sid on 07 Jan 2013

Mohan Bhagwat chose to express this inappropriately, and at the wrong time. I cannot help agreeing that those who push for gender equality should also fight for protection and implementation of Article 14 of the Constitution - equality before law. In India, laws are biased heavily in favour of women, whether or not they are disadvantaged. If you have a live - in relationship with a woman, have consensual sexx, fall out, and she decides to file charges against you that you tricked her by promising marriage, well, that's the end of the road for you. You can be arrested without bail, because suddenly you are a rapist. Try doing this if you're a guy, and claim to have been taken advantage of by a woman. You'll make a laughing stock of yourself. Let us not pretend that the Constitution is being followed in India. It isn't. And no one has had the courage apparently to question this. Our problem is not of poor laws, but poor implementation.

Do women get raped only outside? by Ashok Chakra on 07 Jan 2013

Someone please go and tell Mr. Bhagwat that women don't just get raped outside late night parties, late working hours or movie shows. They also get raped by their own in-laws and husband inside homes- what about that? Is there a parameter that you use to calculate where women get raped more and where less- what nonsense is this! Women often fall prey to their own people. If educating a girl child, raising her with modern values and giving her freedom makes her a rape victim why do innocent 'uneducated' girls in villages get raped?

Shame on media by Arjun Narayanan on 07 Jan 2013

It's absolute shame on the media for having distorted what he said in the context of a contract marriage in the west. Don't you guys have the basic sense to understand what a person speaks? Please check the entire video and stop this hate mongering

IE's expertise in distorting facts by rajmohan on 07 Jan 2013

What we understood from what Mohan Bhagat said is that he was explaining the western culture where mainly marriages are on contract basis, and the woman is bound to husband to look after him. How IE 'understood'it in a different way?

Check the reality on you tube by Jai Bharat on 07 Jan 2013

Its shameful the way Media has distorted his comment. He said just the opposite. He was explaining the western theory of social contract that sees even marriage as contract. Don't be a moron to blindly believe this news. Go and check what he said on you tube.

RSS Chie's comment on husband-wife responsibilities--- by DRRao on 07 Jan 2013

In the modern days husband and wife should share equal responsibilities in their domestic affairs. This is a matter of cooperation between the husband and wife.No doubt some truth lies in Bhagha's statement. But it is not whole truth.Rapes occur in urban areas more than in rural areas because modern fashions exist in urban areas than in rural areas. Living still BC era! by Shalini Nair on 07 Jan 2013

In short, a woman should not be educated, otherwise she will work and teach her children. If she is educated, her concentration will be diverted from her husband also to teach the children. Solution: Woman illiteracy to be maintained throughout. Bhagwat forgets that equality has been executed. If he doesn't, tomorrow he will start "sati' system too as woman's responsibility is only to take care of her husband not the family. Solution: If husband dies by chance, she must jump into 'sati'. His RSS will take care of every single family of those affected. There are many more solutions, etc. He is there to guide everyone as a messiah to every man. All the best for your philosophies and ideas! INDIRA GANDHI WAS A Woman, Mr Bhagwat, who was a practical lady. I would not appreciate Congress party for the same it is a just a tail nagging still on her name and not practical only tainting the country. There are woman who existed and still existing like Sarojini Naidu, Jhansi, Savitribai, etc

RSS haters in Media by V. P. Singh on 07 Jan 2013

This article is true reflection of hate mongering being undertaken by Media against RSS. Gone are days of Shri Ram Nath Goenka. IE is now tool in the hands of ruling dispensation that too for spreading lies. RSS Pramukh said nothing new but he said for non Indian marriages, every one knows thatfor Hindus marriage is for 7 lives ( 7 Janmo tak ). There is no ambiguity that at least Nikaah ( Marriage in Islam ) is purely contract with all three elements legally binding contract - Offer, Acceptance & consideration ( Mehar ). Nikah is open ended but another form of marriage in Muslims - Mutta is time bound contract. The illiterate reporter & editor should invest some time in reading on the subjects & avoid spreading canard.

loss of rationality by chetan on 07 Jan 2013

problem with RSS training and ideology is that it creates irrational people who sees things through the cultural prism and fail to see the reality. many past rapes in india that did not receive so much attention happened in rural india and not in cities. To say that it happened due to western influence is as absurd as to say that someone drowned because it rained.

Congress rule by Bharat on 07 Jan 2013

Mr.Mohan Bhagwat, with due respect we are in the year 2013 and not in 1947. Thanks to Congress government for bringing Inflation, for creating gap between Rich and Poor, for bringing the nation to such a situation where a common man finds difficult even to raise single child.

Mohan Bhagavat by rnp on 06 Jan 2013

This man is living in the past. No importance should be given to his statements. It is the man who is supposed to look after the woman and his children and not the other way although she does it diligently.

How can a un-maaried person advise on family life? by Satya on 06 Jan 2013

I'm surprised that an unmarried person is advising on family life. Few months ago I saw picture of Shri Bhagwat sitting in a chair & woman volunteer washing his feet in one function in Southern part of India, where he was chief guest. I commented on it but no one followed up.

half truth by nirav on 06 Jan 2013

I have heard the some portion of speach on times now and i found that we are making all the comments without hearing full speach of Bhagwat. He was refering to western marriage where it looks like a contract between two. Media is doing injustice to Bhagwat by not putting the things in right prospective.

Bhagwat's comment about marriage by Bharatpremi on 06 Jan 2013

As expected, IE has totally distorted RSS chief's comments. Please read the RSS spokeperson's statement to find what Bhagwat actually said. He said that marriage is a contract in western civilisation but a sacred institution in Bhartiya tradition. In their zeal to defame the RSS, IE can to go any extent. Newspapaers like IE are also partially responsible for moral degeneration of society.

Can the media please stop asking these guys their opinions? by Tarun on 06 Jan 2013

I don't care what they have to say. Clearly, they can't keep their mouths shut. I'd please ask people to stop asking them about their opinions. An ignorant man's opinion adds NO value to the world.
