Outrage! Woman scientist says girl's intestine would have been intact if she didn't resist rape

rape

Bhopal “Had the girl simply surrendered (and not resisted) when surrounded by six men, she would not have lost her intestine. Why was she out with her boyfriend at 10 pm?” These comments made by an agricultural scientist at a seminar organised by the police provoked an outrage in Madhya Pradesh on Thursday, and demands for punitive action against her.

Dr Anita Shukla, a scientist at the Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia Krishi Vishwa Vidyalaya, had been invited to the seminar on “Women’s Empowerment” in her capacity as the president of Lion’s Club on Wednesday. Women, Shukla said in her speech, had misused the facilities and rights given to them.

Survey: 5 point agenda, Where do you stand?

Following an uproar, Shukla apologised in the evening: “I empathise with the victim and pray to God for her speedy recovery.”

Before coming out with the apology, Shukla, however, had appeared to defend her comments by saying the victim would have been better off not putting up resistance. “When a group of men intend to rape, they will do it. The victim should save herself for bringing the perpetrators to book.”

Senior police officers and the State Women's Commission said they were examining Shukla’s comments.

This is totally outrageous by Ishan on 09 Jan 2013

I am fully in support of Anu. Let's throw her in the same situation and see whether she opposes or not. What was she thinking when making such a statement. The mentality of men in our indian society is already very poor. It shows with comments like this. How can anyone ever justify rape. We talk about fraternity among indians. Are we also taught that we should rape our own sisters. Are we taught that rape is a good thing to do. Hell what is wrong with us. I am a male, aged 21. I was in shock when I heard about this heinous crime. I was depressed that I belong to the male community of india who does such heinous acts. For a few days I wasn't able to look directly into any girl's eyes. I was ashamed that a member of my community did this. And yet here we are with politicians and scientists blaming the victim instead of the culprit and the sick mentality of indian society.

If this represents Indian Attitudes India will never Become a Repeced World Power by Neil Fiertel on 09 Jan 2013

I am mind boggled by the ignorant, foolish and disgusting attitudes of members of the Indian government, judiciary and business community who blame women for sexual crimes against them!! I thought of Imdia until this incident, and the comments rationalizing that males am not control their lust when women wear makeup or skirts? Oh really? Rather it is ignorance macho fascist behaviour on the part of male society in India and a complete lack of the realization that in the civilized world...WOMEN ARE EQUAL TO MEN. Until India comes to grips with that she will fester in the third world in spite of her computers and her movies. The man on the street is living with a viewpoint of a Neanderthal and it seems so are many government members. Until great Indian culture changes this attitude, more than half of India will be living in fear and ignorance and India simply cannot compete with her neighbor China whose women can walk the streets safely in their millions.

Seriously? by Karim on 07 Jan 2013

Are you serious? You said that at a "Women EMPOWERMENT" speech? Instead of punishing the accused you are asking women to go into a shell? You are enabling the rapist even more that its not their fault. Raping a girl is ok if she is outside after 10pm? They used to say a girl should not go out alone after dark, don't take auto/taxi... this girl wasn't out alone, she took a bus... and she still got raped! So what will you say next? Even if a girl is home after dark, its okay to go to her house and rape her? You should be concentrating your energies/resources on fighting the crime, not enabling it or indirectly justifying that it was girl's fault coz she was out after dark? That's not a reason to rape a girl just because she is out after dark; hell, there is NO reason for a rape! I wonder how many times you had to stay out after dark? Would it be okay if someone raped you coz you were out?

Brainless and heartless by joy on 02 Jan 2013

completely agree with kshitij satardekar. Anita Shukla, your life as one who's willing to submit to rape is worth pity. We cant help wondering how you reached where you are.

Were you in your senses when talking about it Ms Shukla ??? by Anu on 31 Dec 2012

So you will surrender yourself if you are in the same situation to save your intestine. I would say throw her into the same situation and put camera on roll and see what she does

Introspection not herd mentality by Kiran on 31 Dec 2012

Indians are turning to herd mentality and following this hysteria of media without thinking of its repercussions. They all resort to mud slinging to anyone who does not support their views. This makes me feel what's the use of India being a democratic country if someone is cursed for taking whats practical. There would have been no questions asked if a boy would have been looted in night when coming from a party and same Anita Shukla advised him to not venture so late in night. What a hyporite public Indians are becoming. Time to grow up my countrymen.

Brainless and Insensitive View given by Ms. Shukla by kshitij satardekar on 31 Dec 2012

Ms. Shukla... Shameful statement from you, being the authority from LION's CLUB and in a speech on women EMPOWERMENT. So, I wont be surprised if You tell your daughters or your loved one to simply surrender themselves to the greedy rape criminals. WE ARE PROUD OF THE VICTIM GIRL who resisted and kept fighting till her death to punish the criminals. Moreover, she revoked the public sensation and feelings of the people against such crimes against women. I am surprised if LION's Club is appointing such senseless women on the higher post. unfortunately if Ms. Shukla faces such incident she would enjoy the rape done on her (this is what she means in her speech, isnt it?). Shameless women....... Work to Make the country safe .....implement law properly...dont give useless suggestions to enjoy rape....... SOme one said it Correct....Degree dont validate Brain, but the person's soul mind does.

Denial to enabling to shaming... by Shashi K. Madan on 31 Dec 2012

India, let this be a wake up call to look within and start making the changes within our families, marriages, care of elders, our inheritance laws, and valuing life. I grew up in India for 21 yrs, and am a social worker and a peace activist. I grew up in Chandigarh, in a good family, but as a 5 yr old heard about the Pujari raping a little girl, and then became aware, of girls being molested or hit on from within their trusted circles at times...which at times were one of the uncles, brothers, cousins, best friends father, helper, doctor, while buying movie tickets, or using Holi as an excuse, by a teachers, married neighbor, brother-in-law and yes politicians and even a judge. Some women continue to enable. This problem runs very deep and needs to be taken seriously. Symptoms of this huge sickness are obvious and have been there. But the roots of the sickness has to be addressed.

Indians are slaves by Fight 4 women on 31 Dec 2012

Today, each n everybody wants publicity whether its negative or positive... India's daughter has been brutally assaulted to death n people are overriding on her faith to gain publicity... Its ridiculous...They should be ashamed of themselves to be even call human...why has Mahatma Gandhi, Subhash Chandra Bose & many more leaders sacrificed their life...Even the Britishers came to rule to India.. let them do it... why has more than thousands people sacrified their life.. Just because - Dr. Anita Shukla can live in peace in free country n not as slaves.. N she is here to make such inhuman comment....People like her are the ones who encourage..crime against women..Its rightly said... WOMEN IS AN ENEMY OF THE OTHER WOMEN

SHAME !!!! by Monica on 31 Dec 2012

Really.. u ARE a WOMAN????? Cannot believe how insensitive, pathetic human being you are. What is the point of such education that inspite of getting great degrees, you are brainless. On de gang rape by Hannah on 31 Dec 2012

Hey Ma'am Shukla I came home at 2am 2 days ago after wedding reception here at Penang island Nothing wrong in bus travel if there is control is there.Delhi is very bad it seems far worse than here.No control over in whole of India on Eve teasing issues n resulting injuries of women who disco to attempt to break free of caste system, puritanical home rules preventing socialisation.Often no punishment of men who get drunk n commit atrocities. Why? Comeon allow dus driver more powers to isolate, tranqillise, call police on thugs, drunks to bring them to justice.N dont cram them like tuna.A few measures like these n your system will improve surely vastly.

ashamed to be Indian.... by RabrideviLalooojiLalooojiLaloooj on 31 Dec 2012

Ms Shukla is correct- although she could have put her views across with more finesse. It is fact that we live in a misogynist and hypocritical society. It is also a fact that Delhi is one of the most lawless cities with the most corrupt government in th world. Having said that venturing in public transport at 10 in the night from Munirka to Dwarka is foolish. Even more foolish is to think that you can overcome 6 brutal animals without a black belt in karate or even some pepper spray...Damini died because she did not think of the reality of our pathetic country...it is. Sad sad day for women...

Ashamed to be an Indian today by RabrideviLalooojiLaloooji on 31 Dec 2012

Ms Shukla is correct- although she did not put forth her opinion with finesse-we have to always be aware of our surroundings, and when we live in a lawless city like Delhi, then we should not resort to public transport, especially if we have to travel from Munirka to Dwarka at 10 in the night. As regard to fighting back, unless we are trained in martial arts and have a ton of pepper spray, It is better to save ourselves and our life and then fight for justice...Damini's died a painful death because she was not mindful of these realities. It is a sad sad day for women....

girls don't go out after ten, and never wear mini skirts...

Is she? by ashamedIndian on 31 Dec 2012

I guess You think that 10 PM is the govt stipulated time for rapists to come out and do their job. What a Dumbass you are. 1) Wearing Miniskirt doesn't mean invitation for rape. If you feel that way, you are just like those six . 2) This is a free country and you can come out whenever you want.

Sick mentality by rights of girl on 31 Dec 2012

For God sake, change your mentality, girl after 9pm on streets doesnt become public property. May be a woman shouldnt deliver her baby after 10.who are you to restrict. These sick animals with such mentality should not be allowed to stray outside after 8 pm. Please keep them in zoo. Our girls will be safe.

Equality by Joseph on 29 Dec 2012

Anybody can go out after 10 or any time. People need to work sometimes at night to put food on their tables. Many poor communities dress even more scantily than a mini skirt. you are suggesting that they be raped? Go back to the hole in the ground that you have come from. No place for your type of thinking in today's world.

This is women is stupid by vipul on 29 Dec 2012

Somebody go and ask this moron women , had the girl been with her husband or brother , the accused would have left her or what? She wants to say that in case she would have been with her husband or brother then the rapists would have dropped her honourably to her home. What stupidness this is ? She should be immidiately relieved from her position as a scientist . She is not fit to serve at this position.

Scientist Comments on Rape by Seif A. Somalya on 29 Dec 2012

This lady scientist needs to be examined by both neurologist and psychiatrist. Being an educated woman herself, it is just incomprehensible that she would be so callous and outright stupid. The justice department needs to investigate her and see if she has violated any code of conduct.
