Kolkata Despite Section 144 imposed in the area, Union Minister of State for Railways Adhir Chowdhury visited Tehatta on Saturday where the police fired at agitators on November 14, killing one person and injuring two persons critically.

Union minister Deepa Dasmunsi was stopped from entering Tehatta on Friday. Chowdhury entered the area using the river route and by not informing the police.

“The people in the area are aggrieved. They have hatred for the police and administration. We have visited the families of the victims. We have reports that the incident was the result of a factional clash, but the situation was not so bad that the police needed to open fire. Other measures could have been taken to control the agitating people. However, we cannot blame the police either, as they cannot decide for which TMC faction they will have to work. Police inaction and administrative failure caused this tragic incident in Tehatta,” he said after visiting the area.

Meanwhile, the criminal investigation department on Saturday took charge of the probe into the incident.
