What? by Ann on 14 Feb 2013

I can't believe this is an issue. As a Canadian, it makes me uncomfortable to travel. The judge is obviously off his rocker.

women as property or service provider by prassoon suryadas on 02 Jul 2011

This shows the double standards of indian women; when it comes to adultery they say women are treated as property, on the other hand when it comes to alimony they say women themselves are property and man should pay the mortgage. Either way men are at fault. Men are confused now they think women are service providers!

"Desai said we need to look at other countries in Europe, the United States and Australia where adultery remains a matrimonial offence but not a crime. " That's the whole point. All this BS in name of equality is just an excuse to impose everything western and destroying everything Indian. At least you mentioned that, even if at the bottom of the report. Proud of you!

We must review all laws (including 498A) which are not gender neutral including this one. by MKR on 01 Jul 2011

It is high time we stop making assumptions in relationships. A woman is not a property of husband, however, when she is married she has made a commitment in reference to the marriage. If she breaks it (or man breaks it for that matter) she must also be punished along with her partner accomplice. Who says marriage is a personal affair in India? Most of the marriages are still arranged, where families come together to find the 'right' match for their wards. Under these cases it will be utterly foolish if we agree to theoretical argument posed by the lawyer in question here. Regarding making rules (and punishments) gender neutral - It is beyond my understanding why there are gender biased rules created, why a particular gender is given initial sympathy. Though if you look at the changed dynamics of women status (specially in cities - where these laws are equally applicable) why can't we anticipate misuse? ALL LAWS BY NATURE MUST BE GENDER NEUTRAL.

It is time we think of gender equality.Old laws need to change. What is good in euopean law or US law we must accept and adopt.

Adultery law treats woman like husband’s property by SREEKUMAR B on 01 Jul 2011

why should adultery be treated as an offence? if someone wants to enjoy with someone let her or let him do so. If his or her partner has complaint against that marriage could be annuled and the couple shall divorce. what else? can loyalty be forced in marriage by the power of law? it is something that has to come from each individuals character. the judges' views are against right of individuals and is not judicious.
