Soon people gathered and the driver of the car, which eyewitnesses said was a Maruti Alto, got down and offered help. He told the crowd that he and his friend would take Khanduri to hospital.
They bundled the bleeding elderly man into the rear seat of the car and drove off.
Khanduri was found unconscious at a secluded spot, 2 km from the accident site. The two men dumped him there instead of taking him to hospital and fled.
A passerby found him and till then it was too late. A police team took Khanduri to Park Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. The doctors said his life could have been saved if he was admitted to hospital soon after the accident.
Khanduri died of excessive blood loss. His head and both legs were fractured, sources said.
Khanduri of Rudraprayag, Uttarakhand, was living with his daughter at an apartment on Sohna Road, Gurgaon.
He was alone when the accident took place.
An FIR has been lodged at the Sadar police station.
“We have formed special teams to catch the driver and his associate. This is an unusual hit-and-run case. We are taking help from the cyber cell as well,” a police officer said.
“Our teams are searching for the accused. The vehicle has not identified, but people told us that it is a Maruti Alto,” Sadar police station SHO Yashwant said.
According to police, the car hit him from behind when Khanduri was crossing the road.
“People stopped and rushed to his aid when they saw him lying splattered on the car roof, bleeding. They were angry. The driver and his associate sensed the anger and tried to pacify the crowd by taking the man to hospital. But after driving 2 km with the victim, they dumped him in critical condition at a secluded spot,” an officer said.
