Police said they had found the body wrapped in a bedsheet, with a label from Saifee Hospital and its Charni Road address on it, in a plastic bag. The police on Tuesday sent a letter to the hospital authorities, asking them to give the police details of births that took place there in the past week.
“We have asked the hospital to give us the CCTV footage of the exit gates of the hospital as well to find out whether any person has left with the same bag,” said Assistant Inspector S Kohli.
A garbage collector who found the body informed the police. The baby’s mouth and nose were bleeding. The police lodged a case under IPC Section 302 (murder) against the unidentified parents of the baby.
“We suspect that the baby was born in Saifee Hospital. It is also possible that the baby was born in some other hospital and the killers might have intentionally thrown the body with the bedsheet of the hospital,” said Kohli.
“We have asked other nearby hospitals as well to provide birth records of the past week,” added Kohli.
Saifee Hospital spokesperson Dr SJ Bapai said the hospital would provide the data requested by the Bhayander police.
