Citybriefs: Knitwear club approaches PPCB over notices

LUDHIANA: The members of Knitwear club, met the Punjab pollution control board (PPCB) chiarman Ravinder Singh on Wednesday over notices that were served to a number of units for violating BOD norms. The units were also asked to install effluent treatment plants (ETPs). The members told Singh that non-ionic detergents are used rarely and do not affect the biological oxygen demand (BOD) of the effluent. Darshan Dawar, president of the Knitwear Club asked the chairman to give instructions to the department not to harass the industry as the Ludhiana knitwear Industry was eco friendly and falls under 'Green Category'.

Traders accuse I-T official of harassment

LUDHIANA: Industrialists from various hosiery and textile associations, on Wednesday, raised allegations on I-T additional commissioner (Range 1 and 3) for harassing them and even creating pressure tactics in name of conducting surveys. Tarun Bawa, president of Bhadurke textile association, Darshan Dawar, president of Knitwear club association, were among those leveling allegations against additional commissioner C S Brar, who has denied all allegations.

PAU scientist new head of ISAE

LUDHIANA: The former head of the Department of Economics and Sociology at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Dr Karam Singh has been unanimously elected as the president of The Indian Society of Agricultural Economics (ISAE) and The Agricultural Economics Research Association (AERA). He is the fourth consecutive PAU scientist to hold the post. “The students are the future, awareness at this stage will help them not only protect themselves, but also spearhead change in attitudes of their family and society towards people with HIV," said Gurkirat Singh, executive director of the institute.

AIDS awareness program held

LUDHIANA: Gulzar Group of institutes held an AIDS awareness program on Wednesday organised by the Red Ribbon Club from Pushpa Gujral Science city, Jalandhar. More than 2000 students from Gulzar group participated in the program. An interactive session attempted to dispel misconceptions and common myths pertaining to AIDS and HIV followed by a short film.

Fashion show held for deaf children

LUDHIANA: Over 200 boys and girls from across India participated in a special fashion show organised for deaf children at Inter National Institute of Fashion Design (INIFD) on Wednesday. The jury members included Mamta, Miss Deaf India 2009. The two winners (Mr & Ms Deaf India 2012) will represent India in the Mr & Ms Deaf International competition to be held in US in February 2013.

Campaign for communal harmony

LUDHIANA: Communal Harmony Campaign and Fund Raising Week, under the banner of National Foundation for Communal Harmony (NFCH), was celebrated on Wednesday at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital. Principal Dr Daljit Singh stressed on the need for promoting communal harmony in the country while medical and nursing students participated in various competitions.

Five-day celebrations kick-off at BCM

LUDHIANA: A five-day extravaganza of annual celebrations started at BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar with first-day show 'Rishtey' focusing on importance of family bonding for children. Mesmerizing performances on the theme were presented by the students of class I. The celebrations will continue for the next four days with students from class II-V performing on various themes.
