“The urban transport budget will ensure that the funds reserved for any development work in urban transport does not get diverted to any other work. The civic body will also have to be committed to make sufficient provision every year in the budget for urban transport,” said municipal commissioner Mahesh Zagade.
All the development work related to urban transport would be carried out through the funds available under the head, he said adding the revenue collection and expenditure for the urban transport will be under this new head.
The civic body at present has stake in the only public transport PMPML service but has plans to extend it to metro rail and mono rail in the next few years. Earlier, the elected representatives across the partyline came down heavily on the civic administration for poor management during the heavy downpour in the city last week that led to flooding in parts of the residential locality and the water pumping station. Seeking action against the civic officers, the elected representatives pointed out that it was due to the failure of civic staff to clean up the nallah and storm water drain that the city had to face such a situation. The administration is also shielding those encroaching the natural flow of the stream, they said urging for demolition of structures that come across the nallah.
The elected representatives took the administration to task for failing to ensure equitable distribution of water across the city.
