Raja Hindustani Vs Ghatak (1996)

Sunny Deol and Rajkumar Santoshi had become a formidable pair after Ghayal and Damini. Hence, they took on the combined might of Aamir Khan and Karisma Kapoor in Dharmesh Darshan’s Raja Hindustani during the 1996 Diwali. Both started out well, but Khan and Kapoor’s chemistry and the famous on-screen kiss set the cash registers ringing, leaving behind Deol’s dhai kilo ka haath.

Mission Kashmir vs Mohabbatein (2000)

Hrithik Roshan was the nation’s new heartthrob after his debut Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai broke many box office records. The popularity gave them the confidence and the makers of Mission Kashmir decided to take on big stars for Diwali in 2000. However, the film was pitched against Aditya Chopra’s Mohabbatein with two of the Bollywood’s biggest stars — Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan — which eventually won the battle.

Don Vs Jaan-e-man (2006)

Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan were back at being pals at this point. So the clash between the two did not generate news the way it would today. SRK’s Don, a remake of Amitabh Bachchan’s classic, clashed with Shirish Kunder’s Jaan-e-man, with Salman, Akshay Kumar and Preity Zinta in lead roles. This was Shah Rukh’s first blow to Kunder.

Saawariya Vs Om Shanti Om (2007)

The biggest clash to date, Farah Khan’s Om Shanti Om released alongside Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya. The latter’s film was the launch vehicle for two star kids, Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor. Shah Rukh Khan had his six pack abs and a new girl opposite him who is today one of the top female stars, Deepika Padukone. Khan, in fact, famously said that he would “destroy” Saawariya at the box-office. He kept his word.
