Kolkata Congress supporters blocked the National Highway-2 outside the deserted Tata Motors’ small car factory site in Singur on Sunday, demanding a new factory be set up in the area.

The blocked, which began at 10 am, brought the traffic movement on NH-2 to a halt. It was only after 1 pm that the administration was able to resume vehicular movement on the highway linking Kolkata to Delhi.

The protestors, led by senior Congress leader Mannan Hossain, demanded that the government should return the land acquired from the farmers if it fails to set up another factory soon.

Threatening to launch more protests, the congress supporters demanded compensation to all farmers whose land was acquired for the small car project.

“On 18 January, our supporters will block 30 major roads across the district. On February 20, we will stage a demonstration in front of the district magistrate office in Hooghly,” Hossain said.
