In September, Newsline reported an RTI query response that said corporators, instead of discussing serious civic issues, were more keen on deciding names for roads and structures.
Yashodhar Phanse, leader of the Sena in BMC, said, “Balasaheb was a national figure. He dedicated his life to the progress of Mumbai. We should build a memorial for him at Shivaji Park.” He said either the Sewri-Nhava link or the coastal road project be named after Thackeray.
BJP leader Dilip Patel demanded that the Navi Mumbai International Airport be named after Thackeray. Congress corporator Naina Sheth said, “We should rename Dadar station after Bal Thackeray.” Sena corporator Ramesh Korgaonkar demanded that Churchgate station be renamed.
Congress corporator Sunil More suggested that part of Indu Mill be used for creating a memorial for Thackeray. MNS corporator Sandip Deshpande suggested that the memorial be built at Indu Mill and a health centre be established in Dadar.
Sena corporator and BMC Law Committee chairman Raju Pednekar said, “We should include a chapter on Bal Thackeray in school syllabus so that future generations know how great a leader he was.”
An emotional MNS leader Dilip Lande said, “When I was part of the Shiv Sena, Balasaheb had called a meeting. At that time, I was suffering from spondylosis, and sitting uncomfortably. He noticed my discomfort and asked me what was wrong. When he found out, he immediately called for a doctor and called me the next day to check on me.”
