Dabha owners protest at Reikhy Chowk

Ludhiana A dhaba with an AC hall, tables and chairs can no longer be termed as one and needs to register itself as a restaurant. This is part of the new instructions issued by the excise and taxation department, which sent teams to randomly check sales at various dhabhas across the city on Friday.

The members of the checking teams stated that many such dhabas had sales that crossed more than a crore per annum but were still only paying the lumpsum dhaba tax.

The teams of assistant excise and town planner (AETC) Jaskaran Brar, however, faced protests at Reikhy Cinema Chowk. The dhaba owners in the area downed their shutters and did not allow the teams to check their sales.

“Our teams went to other locations following the protest, and the dhabas had been opened immediately. So we went again and found some records. We will go again after a few days. About 6 dhabhas in my jurisdiction are doing sales in the range of Rs 50 lakh to a crore per annum and still they are registered as dhabhas and when we check them, they object. However we have to convert them into restaurant so as to take VAT from them,” Brar said.
