Ahmedabad Suspended IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt on Friday moved an application before the Nanavati-Mehta Commission demanding an independent probe into the alleged destruction of certain intelligence records related to the 2002 riots sought by him.

Bhatt moved the application under the provisions of the Commissions of Inquiry Act. The Commission has asked the state government to file its reply to the application by November 23.

Bhatt has sought 47 documents from the Gujarat Police to file a detailed affidavit before the Commission related to the alleged roles played by different government functionaries during the riots.

However, the government did not provide access to those documents to him and later told the Commission that nine of the 47 documents sought by Bhatt had been destroyed in “routine course”.

Govt seeks clarification on High Court order

Meanwhile, the state government has moved an application before the High Court seeking clarification on its order dated October 12 on the PIL moved by Bhatt and a voluntary organisation related to the 47 documents sought by Bhatt.

The court has kept the matter for hearing after Diwali vacation.
