THE MHB police investigating the murder of Navraj Kwatra, the 65-year-old son of well-known Punjabi writer, the late Amrita Pritam, have formed four teams of five officers each to trace the two who killed him on Friday.

The police have also started recording statements of the models and actresses who were in touch with the deceased. “As Kwatra was a script writer and fashion photographer, he was in touch with many models and actors, whose portfolios he had shot. As the motive behind the murder is not clear, we are investigating all aspects of Kwatra’s life,” said an officer.

After the murder, the two assailants fled in the direction of the main road in Borivali (West), the officers said. “We released the sketches of the two and have forwarded these to all police stations and also to our informers,” said the officer.

When conducting a search of Kwatra’s studio apartment where he was killed on Friday, the police found pornographic material which has left them suspicious about the victim.

Police officers investigating the case said the models whose objectionable photos have been found at Kwatra’s residence had been called to the police station to record their statements.

“We might get some leads about the motive by questioning the models and Kwatra’s clients,” said Mahesh Patil, Deputy Commissioner of Police (zone 11).

Kwatra’s wife, son and daughter reached Mumbai on Saturday. “We recorded the statement of the family members to find out whether they had suspected anybody behind the murder. The three, however, said that they did not have any clue about the assailants and the motive behind the murder,” said Patil.

Around 12.30 pm on Friday, the police were informed by the neighbour that two men entered Kwatra’s flat at the ground floor in Wilderness Apartments located near LIC Colony in Borivali (West). Kwatra had converted his residence into a photo studio.

Kwatra’s neighbor, who is also a senior citizen, heard his shout for help. The neighbour rushed to Kwatra’s flat and rang the doorbell several times, but nobody answered.

As soon as the neighbor rushed to the rear side of the building, the two accused, who police suspect were waiting for the senior citizen to move, fled from the main door. The neighbours then went to Kwatra’s studio and found him lying on the floor with both his hands and legs tied. Kwatra was declared dead at a hospital.
