At the congress Friday

Ludhiana A four-day 5th Indian Horticultural Congress on “Horticulture for Food and Environment Security,” organised by Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) in association with the Horticultural Society of India (HSI), concluded here on Friday. A close and detailed farmer-scientist interaction was held wherein members of PAU Kisan Club, progressive farmers from across the state and farm experts from prominent agri-institutions participated.

Chairing the concluding session, PAU Vice-Chancellor Baldev Singh Dhillon emphasised the need for setting up of location-specific processing plants in various parts of the state.

Referring to cooperative farming, he exhorted the farmers to work in groups, share a common bond and identify each other’s interests and problems. He said the cross-border trade at Attari-Wagah Border would fortify export of fruits and vegetables to Pakistan and benefit the farmers too. The PAU would be making vigorous efforts to transfer technology to the farmers on different aspects of horticulture by training them at Krishi Vigyan Kendras, and the farmers should pass their feedback immediately to the PAU for reprioritisation of the research programmes, he added.
