Gurdwara clash: Badal seeks PM’s intervention

Chandigarh Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Friday sought Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s intervention “to stop the Delhi government from going ahead with its dangerous move to interfere in the religious affairs” of the Sikh community.

This came a day after clashes broke out in Rakabganj Gurdwara in Delhi in the run-up to next month’s Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) elections.

In his letter to Singh, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader requested him to ensure that the DSGMC elections were held in accordance with Supreme Court directions.

Badal alleged that Friday’s clashes were a consequence of the “unjustified and provocative move of the Delhi government to interfere in the religious affairs of the Sikhs through a proposed amendment to the electoral procedure in the DSGMC”.

Meanwhile, the Akal Takht – highest Sikh temporal seat – formed a three-member committee to probe the clash. The panel will submit its report on November 22.
