Kolkata The Writers’ Building, the seat of the state government, wore a deserted look today with not even one per cent of the total work force turning up for duty.

While Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee attended office, Chief Secretary Ashok Mohan Chakrabarti and Home Secretary Ardhendu Sen came but left before lunch. IGP (law and order) Surojit Kar Purokayashta, however, attended office.

Minister for Urban Development Ashok Bhattacharya and Minister for Health and Family Welfare Surya Kanta Mishra came only to attend a meeting on Darjeeling.

“The government is helpless in this kind of situation. If people do not do their duties, we cannot force them,” Chief Secretary Ashok Mohan Chakrabarti said.

All the gates of the building except for the main gate were locked.

Not a single government bus or tram was seen on the roads. “We cannot force the drivers to take out buses on the road,” Chakrabarti said.

CPM cadres called the shots on the roads, stopping vehicles even as policemen watched. They even allowed press people only after checking the identity cards of journalists.
